Developing Mobile Web Based Applications: An Introduction H17J 34

Assessment task 1-3

Outcome(s) covered 1-3

Assessment task instructions

Project Brief

Part 1

You should draw on existing knowledge as well as carry out research into the

mechanics behind the developing world of mobile apps and handheld devices and report back to the client. Your findings can be delivered as either a 1,000 word report (with visuals) or presentation lasting no less than 10 minutes covering the following aspects:

• Description of the Mobile Industry Structure.

• Explanation of the differences between available platforms.

• Description of a range of target devices.

• Explanation of the principles applicable to the mobile environment.

• Comparison of product development and design solutions.

Presentations will need to be supported by the submission of materials such as

slides, presentation notes, recordings, research based materials etc. Candidates

should evaluate the information gathered during their research.

Part 2

After winning the account, you have now been awarded the project of producing

design documentation and digitally designed elements for use within a web based mobile application suitable for the proposed device. You will agree a scope (choice of device, platform, what the app will do, how it will do it and what the app will not do or allow regarding push notifications, etc, user expectations and a workable schedule) with your client (your lecturer). You will create and produce the design documentation within the pre-agreed timescale.

The design documentation and scope will include the following:

• User requirements and expectations.

• Platform restraints.

• Design aspects for a specific target device.

• A navigational map.

• Storyboard demonstrating interaction.

• Paper mock-up demonstrating navigation and several screen layouts.

• Screen layouts, including any variations for orientation and size.

• Design of a workable User interface.

• A list of features - sound, media, push notifications, etc.

• Design of Icons for use within the application.

• Effective use of colour.

• Use of typography.

• Design of legible graphical elements (orientation and size).

You should consider the development stages of the application and the agreed scope — is the technical capable of the scope? Are milestones set and agreed upon? What consideration to storage and hosting has been researched and agreed? What support, maintenance and updates have been addressed?

Design Options

Cinema app

You are required to design a cinema app that will allow users the opportunity to search film listings and times with a brief synopsis on the film and an option to view the trailer. They will then be able to purchase a ticket and reserve a seat of their choice through the live seat availability system. Your design should give details of how the user will move through the app and what steps are required to book a seat and make payment. Other features with the choice of colour and type should be detailed as annotations and descriptions on sketches. Colour use should be based on the logo and colours used in the current cinema within McArthur Glen and details about how this will be applied should be given. Make sure that good clear colours are used in the booking section with good contrast as this will help usability.

Restaurant app

As part of the second app design there should be a clear navigation structure that allows the user to select from types of restaurant through to booking a table for a specific number of people. Information that will be sent through to the restaurant should be placed within each of the screen designs as well as a short description on each restaurant. This information should be available from the Centre website and the logos of each restaurant could be used in the use of colour in design. Any other pictures that show the eating area could be used as layout in the content. Use good clear colours and layout for booking the restaurant as this will be an essential element to good usability.

Other Design (for Centre)

If you have another aspect related to the Centre e.g. shopping or how to navigate, you can develop this idea as one of the ideas.

Computing app

As part of the development of this unit, you will use this design in stage two of your screen design and as part of the mobile development unit. This app is to be used by current and prospective students and needs to have both sections developed in a specific way to allow both user groups to interact in a meaningful way that will ensure they will be catered for.

Other (own choice)

You can develop your own design if you would like based on an interest or something that you take part in your free time. Please discuss this idea with your lecturer.

Part 3

As the IT Manager, you will need to ensure the prototype app demonstrates the

candidate’s knowledge and skills at developing the web based app that operates on the specific or chosen platform and device. The prototype should demonstrate the following:

• Production of an easy to use mobile web based application prototype.

• Production of an effective navigation route.

• Use of correct technologies for the specific device.

• Scripting of events suitable for the target device.

• Scripting of events that include:

← touch screen events

← key control events

← change events

← button events

← submit events

← saving files in correct formats and location
