Dear Parent/Guardian,

This letter will provide you with information about the annual New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Solo and Ensemble Festival. All student participants will perform their music on Friday June 3rd and Saturday June 4th, held at Rocky Point High School, located at 82 Rocky Pt-Yaphank Rd, Rocky Point 11778.

NYSSMA adjudicators are professional educators and musicians who can provide an objective evaluation of your child’s progress in a musical skill area. For each instrument and voice part, there are six levels of difficulty (1/beginner - 6/advanced). Ratings are based on a scale of musical criteria (technique, posture, accuracy, sight reading, scales, etc.) and written comments on musician artistry. Selection for SCMEA, HMEA, LISFA, All-State and other “honors” concert ensembles request NYSSMA ratings. Students learn the discipline of learning a required piece, the technical skills involved, performance skills and the ability to accept praise, as well as constructive criticism to help them become better performers.

It is important to realize participation in NYSSMA is voluntary. It takes a great deal of time and practice to learn a solo while preparing for this event. We strongly recommend that your child has a private music instructor. When NYSSMA comes near, if we feel that the solo is not at the performance level it should be to receive a highly effective grade, we may suggest that you attend the festival as a “Comments Only” soloist, where you will receive constructive feedback, with no point total indicated.

Just a few reminders to ensure you will have a great experience:

There are three parts to this solo performance:

1) Performance of scales {snare players must do the rudiments listed}- See these requirements on page 2

2) Performance of your solo- The only music that can be performed is the music listed in the current NYSSMA Manual, Edition 31. You should have a photo copy that I gave you, but this is not an original. Please buy one copy for you, as ONLY ORIGINALS MAY BE USED. PHOTOCOPIED MUSIC WILL AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFY YOU FROM THE NYSSMA FESTIVAL. The judge needs an original as well. Many solos come with a piano accompaniment part that you can give to the judge. I have one copy of each book that you can borrow for the judge, but we may need to coordinate with another student who needs it as well. You can buy a second copy if you prefer. Vocal students need to also secure a recorded accompaniment (stereo and CD). See these requirements on pages 3 & 4

3) Sight Reading- Play 8 measures of music you have not seen

We expect to hear your progress at least twice prior to your performance to give you constructive feedback. We can set this up during a free time of yours and mine. If you do not have a recording of your solo, we are more than happy to make one for you to practice with. Just have your parents email us and we will send them back a recording.

Registration fees for NYSSMA are located on the second page. If you would like an official NYSSMA medal earned based on performance, it is an additional $6 charge. All students that would like to participate in NYSSMA must have all forms filled out correctly and money handed in by Friday, February 12th. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at your convenience.

Musically yours,

PERFORMANCE COMPILATION BOOKS OR INDIVIDUAL SHEET MUSIC

Books and Solos to purchase:

You can go to a music store to order and purchase your music. You can also type the information in an internet search engine and purchase the music online to be mailed directly to your home. It is important that you have the correct composer and arranger of your specific solo. Most of the songs are separate solo songs. Some however, are part of a book; these solos will have a {} around them, stating the title of the book, as well as the editor. Please make sure that your music comes in prior to the festival date, as original copies are necessary for the NYSSMA festival.

*If you are doing a song that I did not provide you, you will have to search for this with your private music teacher, as I didn’t put your book information on my list.
