BrainPOP WorkSHOP Outline
This workshop provides an overview of the features included in a BrainPOP 24/7 School subscription. Many of the features outlined in this workshop have specific support materials including videos, step guides and printables available for free on BrainPOP Educators. Click the hyperlinks to view each individual support material.
1. Introduce website If relevent, explain the BrainPOP is also available on iOS, Android, Windows 8.
2. Get a bit of info: what position/grade/tech setup? Do your best to customize your conversation to each person/group. You may want to familiarize yourself with a few topics beforehand.
3. Log in –
a. If schools have 24/7 subscription, they are eligible for “My BrainPOP”. Individual teachers and students can login with personal accounts. You can set up accounts in advance using the admin dashboard, or if you’d like individuals to set up accounts during training make sure you have the unique school educator code on hand.
b. Classroom subscribers will use the username and password from their activation email.
c. Be sure to login as STUDENT to illustrate submission features of My BrainPOP.
4. Introduce Topics
a. Movie List of all topics (model scrolling through movie list and looking for movies that fit your units of study)
b. Categories (click on subject area) ( Units
c. Search Tool (model & point out it shows up after you’ve logged in)
5. Briefly describe (but don’t yet demo!) features on a Topic Page – suggestion: Circulatory System
a. Movie – 3 to 5 minutes, vocab driven, visual, auditory
b. Quiz – 10 question multiple choice
c. Activities (highlight primary source materials)
d. Make-a-Map (for concept mapping)
e. GameUp (Guts and Bolts)
f. FYI – collection of non-fiction informational text entries about each topic. (Great for CCSS question stems!)
g. Lesson Ideas – Support materials for teachers
6. Show movie
a. PAUSE on Tim reading letter. Tell that all movies start with a real question we received from a student or teacher.
b. Point out play/pause feature, and encourage pausing & discussions throughout viewing.
c. Point out CC button for closed captioning.
d. Illustrate how important vocabulary words are called out and defined.
e. Suggest that teachers preview movies to decide where to pause & key points to discuss.
7. Demonstrate individual features

iv. Share ideas for how to hold kids accountable without needing to print each time (laminate, dry erase marker…)
v. Share ideas for how to involve the maximum number of kids (sign language, corners of the room, game show)

8. Click My BrainPOP – and show student activity feed.
a. Shows feed of completed videos, activity pages, game snapshots and quizzes.
b. Orange means the work is saved but not submitted.
c. Green means submitted work has been returned to student with teacher comments.
d. Log in as teacher and illustrate My BrainPOP Teacher Account as well
9. Login as teacher to illustrate My BrainPOP from a teacher perspective

c. BYOD – APP with movie and quiz is available on iOS, Android, Kindle, Windows 8 tablet
d. 1-to-1 setting: great for students submitting individual work to a teacher.
11. Planning out activities before, during, and after movie
a. Before Movie
i. Quiz as pre-test – see what students already know
ii. Activity pages – review vocabulary
iii. FYI – researched informational text, graphs, readings, comic
iv. Begin Make-a-Map concept map with important keywords and concepts
b. During Movie
i. Pause on Tim’s letter – Turn and Talk
ii. Note-taking with Activity pages -- *use closed captioning!
iii. Pause & discuss
iv. Pause for research and note-taking
c. After Movie
i. Retake quiz (printed, independently; whole class – graded)

12. Spread out 1 topic page over a week
a. Day 1: introduce topic, brainstorm, KWL, take quiz as pre-test
b. Day 2: review previous day’s discussion, show movie
c. Day 3: take quiz, try supplemental activity
d. Day 4: try different supplemental features, watch related topic movie, independent assignments…
e. Day 5: revisit movie, quiz, culminating activity
13. Share other BrainPOP products
a. BrainPOP Jr., BrainPOP Español, GameUp, BrainPOP ESLEncourage teachers to explore BrainPOP Educators – (and use the tutorial videos for this training!)
