INFORMATION ABOUT THE SUBJECT POOL:

Subjects’ Rights and Obligations

If you wish, you may participate as a subject in research experiments conducted by Management and Organization faculty and doctoral students, in order to fulfill the research requirement associated with this class. If you do not wish to participate as a human subject, please contact your instructor, who can give you instructions for the written research alternative. Those instructions are also available online at:

If you do not satisfy the requirement, you will have a 5% deduction from your final grade.

Subject participation is sometimes fun and is always a learning experience. If you are under 18 years of age, Federal and University regulations require parental permission before you can participate in any aspect of the subject pool. Please contact your instructor or subject pool manager for more information.

To learn more about the studies you can participate in, and to sign up for participation, please log in to the Sona Systems website at:

Instructions for how to access the Sona Systems website are available here:

If you have any trouble logging in, please contact the Subject Pool Coordinator (contact info available at ).

1. Normally, experiments are satisfactory experiences for both the subjects and the experimenter. However, you are free to withdraw from the experiment at any time and you will receive credit for the amount of time you were present. If you have any questions or concerns about the procedures, write a description of the complaint and the name of the experiment and leave it in the mailbox for the Faculty advisor (in the faculty mailboxes), or email the subject pool coordinator (mgmtpool@u.washington.edu) with your complaint. Please note that the confidentiality of an email message cannot be guaranteed.

2. If you sign up for an experiment and you are not met by the experimenter, you have the right to the credit that your participation would have earned. You must arrive 5 minutes early and wait at least 15 minutes past the time the experiment was supposed to begin. To receive credit, email the subject pool coordinator with the name of the experiment, experimenter’s name, time and location of the experimenter. The coordinator will then verify with the experimenter that you were not met, and will assign you credit for your time.

3. All credit is recorded using the Sona Systems website. You can log in anytime to check to make sure that you have received credit for your participation. Please note that participation credits are posted approximately 24-48 hours after you have participated.

4. Experimenters must provide you with an explanation of the purpose and results of the experiment at the end of your participation. Sometimes results are not available until the end of the quarter, but they should be able to tell you how you can obtain this information. The experimenters will keep the data you provide for them in strict confidence. They are not allowed to release information identifying you in any way without first obtaining specific permission from you.

5. It is your responsibility to be on time to the experiments you sign up for. It is also your responsibility to be in the right place at the right time. If you make a mistake in recording the time or location of your experiment, you will not receive credit when you miss the experiment. Most of the time, you will receive an email confirmation with the time and location of the study you have signed up for, and you will also receive an automatic email reminder 24 hours prior to your scheduled appointment.

If you have any questions about the procedures or your rights as a subject, please feel free to contact the Subject pool coordinator by email (mgmtpool@u.washington.edu) or telephone. Please note that the confidentiality of an email message cannot be guaranteed.
