Quarterly Reading Project 2012-2013

From the 2012-2013 AP Lang syllabus:

Quarterly Book Review:

Each quarter, the student will read one book outside of class. Over the year, the student should read ONE book from EACH of the genres. (Genres: Q1. Biography or autobiography, Q2. Biography or Memoir, collection of letters, or collection of essays; Q3. Nonfiction or collection of essays; Q4. Fiction (a classic to help with AP Literature.) Books must be approved in advance & students are responsible for checking each genre is completed. [I suggest you compliment this by choosing books you can also use in your APUSH class, if you are taking that course.]

After reading the book, the student must submit some type of evidence that he/she actually read the book- showing analysis of the book using the techniques learned in AP Lang class. The evidence is up to the student. (The student may be as creative or as traditional as he or she wishes. It is the student’s responsibility to show that he/she has, in fact, read the work and not relied on Spark Notes, etc. [The teacher can read Spark Notes for herself, thank you very much.] Additionally, each student should prepare a short 3-5 minute presentation for the class which is focused on sharing his/her ANALYSIS of the book using the techniques learned in AP Lang class. This presentation will be part of the overall grade for the project.

Procedure:

□ Choose a book. The teacher will discuss your preferences & choices on a case-by-case basis outside of class. Please be sure to choose content that is appropriate for this school.

□ When choosing a book, the student must not have read the book before, whether it was for pleasure or for a class assignment. It will be considered an act of Academic Dishonesty if the student attempts to use a previously read book for this assignment (meaning a zero on the assignment).

□ After reading the book, the student must submit some type of evidence that he/she actually read the book.

□ Each student should prepare presentation for the class which is focused on sharing his/her ANALYSIS of the book using the techniques learned in AP Lang class.

The attached rubric offers a reference for information to be included in the project for the first 3 Quarters, since the book assignment is non-fiction.

You should be sure to print out & hand in to the teacher the correct rubric at the time you turn in your book project. Failure to do so will result in loss of points.

The student’s goal is not only to convince the teacher that he or she has read the book, but also to convey the student’s personal reaction to the book and deeply ANALYZE the book using the techniques learned in AP Lang class. [Have you got this point of ANALYSIS yet? Don’t tell me the plot or story of the book.]
