CARD OF

THANKS

THANK YOU to all of those families and organizations who have donated money and food to the Anita Food Pantry. With the COVID-19 we are experiencing a record amount of families that are in need of assistance so your donations have been a God send! We are so grateful and appreciative for the support not only from our community, but from surrounding communities. The pantry hours have remained the same. We are open the first and third Saturday of the month from 9-11 a.m. During this pandemic, we are now a drive through service. You will not need to get out of your vehicle. This is for the safety of our clients and volunteers. If you are in need of food or would like to donate, feel free to contact any board member. Again, thank you and God bless!

On The Road With

The Everharts

What in the world do you do when you've done everything you can think of to keep from being bored during this coronavirus pandemic? Being `on the road' sure doesn't work, BUT we got in the car and took a drive anyway. We didn't meet anyone, we didn't talk to anyone, we just took a drive for pleasure. The Lake Anita State Park has had an observed `burn' getting rid of a few stems, leaves and unwanted timber. This park is a beauty anyway. Lots of fishermen on the lake, catching a meal hopefully. It was pleasant just watching them do their thing. The campground is closed, but that doesn't prevent you from seeing the lake closeup and even taking a short walk without having to be near anyone.

We drove down to Massena just to see how things are doing there. One of the things you can do besides watching stale television shows and news that isn't news is to work on your garden, clean up the backyard, do a building project you've been putting off for far too long. We saw a lot of that in Massena. We did the same thing at Cumberland and Wiota. There's a real neat little `cabin' like house on the highway going through Wiota that a guy fixed up really well. He used rough lumber to make it look like a beautiful `cabin' from the past, keeping the natural colors and it sure looks neat. Sometimes you will see him on his front porch in a rocking chair. He did a super good job fixing what was just a normal small house into a real showcase of what houses looked like in the past when lumber was not expensive.

Being musicians, we also spend some time working on new material, IF we ever get to perform again. I personally like to do research on the music that came into Iowa so many years ago. It's kind of interesting, the northern part of Iowa is settled by a lot of Norwegians, Danes and Germans who liked a little cooler climate. The eastern side of Iowa were settlers that stayed close to the Mississippi and their music `likes' were a little different than the `polkas' of the northern side. They clung closely to their own exposure to folk music and carried it with them in their covered wagons, and of course as time went by, it evolved into classical and jazz and even blues.

Digging a little deeper, I found that are still a few churches, especially along the Iowa/Missouri state line in the southern part of the state, that brought southern gospel music to their forefront. Some of that music is easy to listen to and fun to be a part of. It's usually a little up-tempo and can include a `bluesy' style that is fun, too. By the time I got to the western side of Iowa, it changed dramatically. Omaha at one time was the largest stockyards in America. Some say the world, however it may have been, this is where the `cowboy' eventually cattleddrived his stock.

What's fun about all this is, you can still actually `hear' some of the music in all its many formats by simply going to SmithsonianFolkways and taking a listen. Just type in whatever it is you want to hear. If you want to hear someone in particular, aaaahh, let me think of one; oh, yeah, let's say you want to hear some of Bob Everhart's music, even some of his originals, you simply type in his name at Smithsonian Folkways and tap the little arrow beside any of the songs you'd like to hear. You won't get to hear the whole

song, but it's enough to let you know what that's all about.

While on that subject, our good and dear friend Bobby Duff in California has arranged for one of my originals to be on the YouTube channel, whatever that is, with a song he likes called "Dear Grand Ole Opry." So far, he tweets me, we've had 237 hits in just a few days. That's kind of fun, too.

So the bottom line is, we have to win this invisible war against some kind of unnatural virus. That means don't spread it around. And that means don't' stand close to anyone and sure don't sneeze in their face. In the meantime, try to enjoy the `time off' we've got, but we are also praying to our Lord Jesus that this doesn't last too long. If it does, we'll be out of business.

STORING AND HANDLING MEAT: AVOIDING FOOD POISONING

Food poisoning is very serious, but it can also be easily prevented. Follow these rules for meat safety: 1. Freeze raw meats you don't plan to use in one or two days. Wrap meats in freezer paper or bags. 2. Thaw meat overnight in the refrigerator, not at

room temperature. 3. Thoroughly wash your hands and utensils after handling raw meat. 4. Never leave raw or cooked meat at room temperature for more than two hours. Following these simple guidelines can greatly decrease you and your family's chance of getting food poisoning. Contact your pharmacist for other prevention techniques.

We ask that you please wear a mask when

coming in to pick up your prescriptions.

We also have curbside delivery.
