Miriam is a college student. She attends Compton Community College in Compton, California.

Miriam's parents work, but they don't make enough money to pay for Miriam's college tuition. Luckily, Miriam qualified for a student grant. A grant is money from the government. Students don't have to pay back the money back if they graduate college.

Miriam is sad. Some of her friends are working. They use their money to buy new clothes, new cars, and to take vacations. Miriam can't buy anything new. She doesn't have a car. She can't take vacations.
