FEATURE LENGTH SILENT FILM AT BABSON

Saturday, April 17 at 7:30 pm.

SILENTS IN THE HOUSE PRESENTS "THE BIG PARADE"

A blockbuster classic from the silent era, THE BIG PARADE (1925) will be shown at Knight Auditorium on the Babson College campus in Wellesley, MA. The feature length film stars John Gilbert in a role quite different from those he had been portraying. By this film, King Vidor was established as a major director. Part romance, part comedy, THE BIG PARADE tells the story of an American doughboy in France and includes realistic battle scenes that set the standard for the day. Juan Cardona, Jr. will accompany the movie at the Mighty Wurlitzer in Knight Auditorium. Tickets are available at the early purchase price of $8. Learn more by visiting and clicking on Events.

PROUD TO BE A MEMBER OF EMCATOS

Well folks, spring is almost upon us. As a matter of fact as I sit here at the computer, "spring" is filling up the driveway. I guess I'll have to go out and shovel the "spring" so that my wife can get to the garage! Better days are ahead. Those better days of which I speak will feature a Social on April 4 featuring our own Len Beyersdorfer at the console of our "beloved beast."

Many folks don't realize how hard Len works to book the best entertainment for our monthly socials. The artists who have been featured since Len took over as "booking agent" have been outstanding.

I, personally, am thrilled with the job that Len has done. As an organization, we owe him our sincere thanks. Thanks, Len and keep those great artists coming.

Many other members of EMCATOS labor long and hard so that we can enjoy our concerts, socials, and silent movies.  Few who attend our concerts or get this newsletter realize just how much work goes into an EMCATOS production. Our productions, by the way, are professional and creative. We have much to be proud of.  Let's take an informal and brief inventory of what must be done to prepare for a concert or silent film...

secure artist/film

schedule Knight Auditorium

troubleshoot Wurlitzer

create, print, and send out mailings

take ticket orders/mail out tickets

tune Wurlitzer

publicize event (radio/TV/newspapers/web page)

arrange for artist lodgings and transportation (usually two or three day's worth)

secure and sell soda/coffee, etc.

recruit bakers for refreshment table

make crafts for table/sell crafts at table

inventory sheet music and records for sale/sell music and records

recruit ushers for event

make sure auditorium is ready; chairs, etc

set up lighting/sound for event

arrange to sell artist's recordings

staff lighting and sound controls during event

arrange for the Wellesley Ave. gate to be open

sell tickets at the actual event

make punch and man the refreshment tables after the concert

and many , many more....

These jobs are done by many wonderful volunteers. We could always use more help. If you have a desire to help your club, contact Bob Evans, or any member of the Board of Directors. All of the members that make sure these, and many other jobs, are done right and on time for our events deserve a standing ovation. We literally could not exist without them.

Our final event for the concert season will feature Simon Gledhill, world-class organist. We have long sought Simon for an appearance. On May 1 at Babson, and May 2 at The Shanklin Music Hall. Every member who is able should make an effort to attend one (or both) of these concerts. You will not be disappointed. Simon always offers a fantastic concert experience. Be there or be sorry you missed it!

The May 23 Social will feature a barbeque by Bobb Partridge. It is a joint meeting with neighboring chapters. Watch for a mailing with the details.

Finally, we will be seeking help for our 2006 Regional Convention. We will be glad to hear from any of our members who are willing and able to help in any way. You'll be receiving a detailed list of committees in your next issue of The Pipes. Our aim is to make the 2006 Regional Convention twice as good as the 2000 Regional. You can help us achieve this goal by volunteering to help.

On behalf of your EMCATOS  Officers and Board of Directors I wish you a safe and happy Spring and Summer season. Bob Evans

OPT-IN TO EMAIL DELIVERY OF THE EASTERN PIPES

AND SAVE EMCATOS $$$$

Many organizations, profit and non-profit alike, are trying to migrate US Mail delivery of information to email delivery for one important reason: It saves them money! And EMCATOS is no exception.

Here is what you can do to help.

1. If we currently have your email address on file, you should already have

received an email from WebMaster@ that contains instructions for how you can opt-in to email delivery of the Eastern Pipes.

2. If you have an email address and have not yet received the email mentioned in (1) above, that probably means that we either do not have your email address or the address we do have is incorrect. In this case, send email to WebMaster@ with the Subject set to "Pipes Email" and include your name and email address in the body of the message. We will then send you an email to that address explaining your Pipes options.

Note that our Web site at contains the current issue of the Pipes, plus an archive of past issues, starting with fall, 2003.

Check it out by clicking on the About / Join EMCATOS stop tab and following your nose.

If you take no action or do not have email, you will continue to receive the Pipes via US Mail. Thank you for your help!

WANTED

Your back issues of THEATRE ORGAN. They must be in excellent condition, as they are sent to possible new members of ATOS and EMCATOS. Please get them to me at a Social or concert. Thanks. Carolyn Wilcox.

THEATRE PIPE ORGAN RECORDINGS, MUSIC, AND LITERATURE The EMCATOS thrift shop needs your surplus theatre pipe organ memorabilia. Please donate any items that you no longer need, as we can sell them at Babson concerts. We especially need single LP recordings of both pipe and electronic organ music. Also albums, sheet music, and other literature pertaining to organs. We use the proceeds to help defray the cost of maintaining our Wurlitzer. What is the saying? "One person's trash is another person's treasure!" To arrange for a donation (and pickup if needed), call Lawrie Rhoads at 508-359-2077.

EARLY FILMS WITH THE EMPHASIS ON COMEDY

Before all the sophisticated technology of today, there was just plain movie making, with cameras and film and lots of creativity. An event in July features films from archival institutions and private collectors and goes on for four days in the Boston area. Here are some details: the name is

SLAPSTICON II, Thursday, July 8 through Sunday, July 11. One venue will be Knight Auditorium on Friday, July 9 at 7:30 pm with an evening of silent films accompanied by Juan Cardona, Jr at the Wurlitzer. A flyer will be sent to members of EMCATOS, containing ticket ordering information. For information now, call Dorothy Bromage at 978-670-1269 or send email to @.
