The ABC’s of Preschool
A Appropriate Dress & Arrival: Students are to follow the guidelines for dress code as stated in the Student Handbook. Your child should wear a pair of shorts under their skirt/dress. When the snow flies, please send slip on boots, mittens, snow pants, a hat, and an appropriate coat for your child. Flip-Flops are not the safest shoe option for a preschool child outside. We do a lot of running and climbing on the playground. My aide will have bus duty in the morning & I will be getting breakfast set up in our cafeteria. Therefore, if your child comes to school early, please take them to the elementary gym between 7:45-8:00. My aide will bring your child to the classroom after everyone from our class is off the bus.
B Backpacks, Breakfast, & Boots: Students should bring a backpack to school every day. Please do not have any key chains on the backpacks. Breakfast: We will go to breakfast as a class in the morning. Your child is not required to eat breakfast. Please let us know if you DO NOT want your child to eat breakfast. You can apply for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program to help with the costs of school breakfast and lunch. Transitional Kindergarten students will be in Mrs. Hamers’ room during our breakfast time on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Please make sure your child eats breakfast at home on these days. However, if you want, your child can eat breakfast on Wednesday morning. They will go to Mrs. Hamers’ room later on this morning due to school wide assemblies for the other grades. Boots: PLEASE get boots without laces. It’s much easier for all of us!
C Coat Hooks, Communication, Classroom Website, and Classroom Blog: Each child has a locker labeled with his or her name. Backpacks and coats will be hung in the lockers. Lockers will be shared between the two preschool classes. So please take coats and backpacks home every night. Communication is essential when working with and teaching young children. We will be having daily communication with parents. However, you will get an update on their preschool day (center choices, small group activity, and book read at large group) in their folder once a week. Please initial these entries and add a comment from home once a week in your child’s folder. This can be about an activity you did at home. Also, be sure to always ask questions if you have them. Our classroom webpage can be found at: . Our classroom blog can be found at: . You can find upcoming events, a slideshow of classroom pictures, monthly newsletters, educational resources, the Friday schedule, the ABC’s of Preschool, and more on these two websites.
D Daily Snack/Milk Time: In the afternoon we will be having juice/milk with our daily snack. You will need to pay a one time snack fee in the office. There is also a fee for afternoon milk/juice. This can be paid once a year or for each semester. Please be sure to keep money in your child’s milk & lunch accounts.
E Entering and Exiting the building: Due to safety concerns we ask parents to check-in at the office before picking up/dropping off your child if arriving late or leaving early. If you are picking up your child, please pick up your child on time, the school day ends at 3:25. The school day starts at 8:15. I would also like parents and other caregivers to sign-in and sign-out your child in our classroom each day. I will have a clipboard on the table or bookshelf when you walk in our door.
F Fun and Folders: In this classroom we learn through fun! Each child has his or her own folder to use daily. This is how we communicate. We will not send home a note once a week if your child’s folder is at home.
G Good Times & Great Experiences…all will happen here!
H Hand-washing & Hygiene: We ask that all students wash their hands before entering the room for the day. We will also be washing hands multiple times through out the day!
I Iowa Quality Preschool Program: We are an Iowa Quality Preschool Program! All areas of the Program are assessed on a yearly basis to maintain top quality of the program. We follow the Iowa Quality Preschool Program Standards, the Iowa Early Learning Standards, and the Creative Curriculum objectives and dimensions.
J Jackets: Jackets…please cut off any hood strings on your child’s jackets as they are a choking hazard. Also start practicing zipping with your child!
K Kindness: Being kind to each other is a very important part of our classroom.
L Lunch & Library: Hot Lunches are available for purchase for all children. We do serve breakfast, lunch, and snack family style. If you choose to send a Cold Lunch with your child, please pack a healthy one! Let me know one day in advance if you would like to join your child for lunch. Forms will be available for Free & Reduced Lunches in the fall of the school year. We will visit the Maple Valley Elementary Library on Monday and Tuesday morning. Your child may keep their book for a week or return it early. There is a tub in our classroom to return books. Your child may not check out a new book until they return their previous one.
M Moms and Dads & Money: The more you are involved with your child’s education, the more growth you will see. Money: When sending money to school for lunch/milk money/Scholastic book orders…please put it in a sealed envelope labeled with your child’s name, what it’s for, and the amount.
N Newsletter: Be sure to read the School Newsletter to know what is going on here at Maple Valley. A Classroom Newsletter will be sent home monthly in your child’s folder. I will also email the newsletter to each family and post it on our classroom website.
O Oral Hygiene: We brush teeth once a day after lunch time. Please provide a toothbrush for your child.
P Practice & Patience: Practice makes it easier…not Perfect! Please practice with snaps, buttons, and with winter outerwear at home! Patience is needed when children are learning new skills. Sometimes as parents we need to remember to take a breath and to let our child try to do things themselves. It might take longer, but your child will benefit in the end!
Q Questions, Quiet, and Quiet Time: If you have any question or concerns please let me know. Quiet: To show respect to others in the building, we need to be quiet when walking in the hallways. Quiet Time will happen every day in the afternoon for 50 minutes. This will be a time to rest our bodies & relax. During this time, students are able to have ONLY small BLANKETS at school. We ask that no pillows or toys are sent for quiet time.
R Respect: Respecting others is another important element of our classroom. We will treat others as we like to be treated.
S Snack, Staff, & Surprises: Snack-We eat snack in the afternoon. There is a snack fee that needs to be paid to the school office. Staff: Our Early Childhood staff is very flexible and caring for all students. We always keep with the requirements and ratios set by the Iowa Quality Preschool Program Standards. Surprises: There are always some every year!
T Tuition & Transitional Kindergarten: Tuition - If your child turns 4 or 5 before September 15th they are funded by the state. Families with students not 4 by September 15th pay tuition of $19 per day. Scholarships are available to those who financially qualify from Monona County Empowerment and SHIP in Woodbury County. Mrs. Hamers will work with the Transitional Kindergarten students on kindergarten Core Reading skills from 8:15-9:15 (M/T/Th/F) and from 9:15-10:00 (W).
U Understanding: I understand that this is a lot of information at once. Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or comments.
V Variables: Monday and Tuesday we will attend Library. Your child will need to return their library book the next day they have school to get a new one. Other Variables such as Art and P.E. will be done within the classroom.
W Walking & Wednesday’s: The students must walk in the classroom and in the halls at all times. Occasionally, we will be taking walks around town for movement activities when the weather permits! Every Wednesday is a Half-hour late start. Classes start at 8:45 on Wednesday. We will still eat breakfast on this day but it will be later than normal. Transitional kindergarten students may eat breakfast on Wednesday mornings if you wish. They will go to Mrs. Hamers’ room later on this day due to school wide assemblies for the other grades.
X X-tra Clothes: Every child needs to bring an extra set of warm & cool weather clothing to school. Extra Clothes are to come in a Ziploc-baggie labeled with your child’s name.
Y You and Me: Let’s work together.
