ABSTRACT

This curriculum guide for secondary teachers outlines

$ resource units dealing with the free enterprise system. Although

intended for use ,by teachers in Louisiana, the guide car be utilized

or adapted, by educators in any state. The guide is comprised of nine

sections dealing with the following topics: (1) heritage and

characteristics of the American free enterprise system; (2) the

nature of the American economy as a free enterprise System; (3) the

role of the individual in the free enterprise system; (4) the role of money and banking in the American free enterprise sstea; (5) the

role of business; (6) the role of labor; (7) the role of government;

(8) the American free enterprise system and other economic systems;

and (9) problems, benefits, and the future of the American free

enterprise system. From one to six units are atlined within each

section. Objectives, concepts, generalizations, learning activities

and a vocabulary list are ,provided for each unit. Teachers hill find

it necessary to develop the resource units structured by the

curriculum guide into teaching units and lesson plans-. A sample

eighth grade unit on the Louisiana purcli'ase, a discussion of

evaluation techniques and a biblidgraphy of student resources are

also included. The appendix contains two skills charts.. One cf the

charts identifies skills that are tc be cooperatively developed and are, therefore, shared responsibilities of social studies teachers

and others. The other chart designates those skills which are the

major responsibility of the social studies program. (Author/RM)

1979-80 school year, curriculum guides for social representing 411 levels of professional education

studies and all

were developed by geographic 'areas

Louisiana. The major thrust of the curriculum establishment of minimum standards for student

development process in each of the guides has been the achievement. The curriculum guides also contain activities

designed to stimulate learning for those students capable of progressing beyond the minimums.

Following the mandate of Act 750, curriculum standards for all required subjects are dow ready for full

program implementation. The statewide implementation is not, however, the end of the ment process. A continuing procedure for.revising and improvidg curriculum materials
