Michael Midgley

ECDL IT user skills level 1 certificate

How has your learning experience with the Adult Learning and Skills Service impacted on your day to day life? When I met with my Learning and Skills Adviser at the first appointment I described myself as a technophobe. So when I was given the chance to do an ECDL computer course, I took it. At first it was very frustrating like trying to write without knowing the alphabet. I had to persevere and hang in there.

As I progressed, it became joyful as it was me producing documents, applying for jobs and updating and sharing information. I now do not need to pester people whilst missing out on job opportunities and sharing information at the right time.

ECDL in IT user skills certificate level 1 BCS

This course is aimed at learners who have reasonable computer skills and would like to learn more and gain a recognised IT qualification. These courses run for 38/39 weeks of the year, so you can join a course at various intervals throughout the year and progress at your own pace. This course can take up to 17 weeks to complete.

Education and training

We offer a suite of qualifications which develop the knowledge and skills required to meet the support needs of early years, primary, secondary and special needs schools. These qualifications are suitable for those already working as learning support staff in schools and those wanting to pursue a new career in education. Why not make an appointment with a Learning and Skills Adviser to find out which programme is best suited to your needs?

James Balf

Supporting teaching and learning in schools level 3 certificate NCFE/CACHE

The course I did with the Scarborough Adult Learning team opened a number of doors for me when I really needed it. The course enabled me to connect with my local community, I made friends, I started a relationship, and I was respected by professionals at schools and on my course.

I found the work itself in schools really rewarding and a brilliant experience. I still do now in my job at a special school, every day is brand new and full of surprises, some tough, some just down right fun! I love helping people and supporting people as they learn, it suits me and I love working with the young people.

I chose to do the course because I didn't know what else to do and friends and family said I might suit education, so I tried it out and ended up loving it. Next I plan to just keep going and get settled into my new career. I'm currently in the middle of an NVQ 3 in supporting teaching and learning, but really I just want more experience and to embrace this new thing, because I love it!
