Students will critically analyze texts and will express those thoughts in writing. Vocabulary, grammar, mechanics and values found in various writings will be a focus of this class as well. Students will also complete an intensive research unit, showing evidence of research, prewriting, interviewing a source, correctly using MLA procedures and producing a final product. Late Work PolicyStudents are expected to complete and turn in all work on time. It is important that the student communicate any issues to the teacher. Zeros will be recorded until work is submitted; points will be deducted for late work. Classwork:Classwork is meant to be completed in class, not “later.” Students are expected to work on classwork and to complete those assignments in class; work will be turned in as is. If the student has made a concerted effort and has not finished classwork, that student needs to see Ms B. Make-up Work PolicyAs per the handbook, a student has 1 week to turn in work from an absence. After that, late points will be deducted. Essays and the research paper will be turned in online via Blackboard, which may be done from home or from the student lab or the library at school. Demonstrates the ability to evaluate, analyze, synthesize and apply content principles. Grade improvement is always encouraged for B students.C 79%-70%The student demonstrates proficient knowledge and the ability to apply and analyze content principles. Work shows average effort. Grade improvement is recommended for C students.D 69%-60%Demonstrates a basic understanding of recalling or comprehending content principles. Grade improvement is strongly advised and Advisory may be required. Graduation could be negatively impacted if this range of grades follows the student into the final exam. F 59%-0%Understanding is below basic in relation to content principles. Work is of poor quality and does not meet standards or expectations. ADVISORY WILL BE REQUIRED. They will have one week from the day the grade is inputted in PowerSchool to correct their tests during ILT. Students will not be allowed to take their tests home to correct. Corrections are not allowed for quizzes.CheatingCheating, or being involved in cheating, will ALWAYS result in parent notification. Cheating in my classroom will result in a zero for the assignment, and the incident will be recorded in PowerSchool.All essays and the research paper are submitted online via Blackboard, which runs all papers through Safe Assign, a checker for plagiarism. What is cheating? Among others:-Plagiarism is cheating!-Copying anyone else’s classwork, test, quiz, essay, research paper or project is cheating!- Allowing someone else to do your work is cheating!-Copying/taking a picture of any portion of a test or other graded work for your later use or to share with others is cheating!If students become more inventive, this list may grow longer.Cell PhonesBecause cell phones are used for a variety of methods in cheating, their use is prohibited in my class. Please conduct business or make personal phone calls and texts before coming to class. Ahead of time, please remind those who wish to contact you that you are essentially at work and have them leave a message or a text so that you can contact them when you have free time. Quarter RecoveryStudents who fail quarters 1, 2, and 3 will be offered Quarter Recovery on a Quarter Recovery schedule offered by the school. There is no quarter recovery available for Q4.Tardy PolicyStudents who are tardy to class will NOT be admitted to class without a pass from the tardy station.
