Would children in your family benefit from support and encouragement with homework?
? Drop in to get free help at Homework Help sessions run by trained staff at many city libraries.
? Open to children and young people from primary school up to GCSE level.
? We have resources to support school work and reading, including: children's reference books, free access to computers, the internet and printing.
How we can help with homework
Our staff are trained to give guidance and help to children and young people with homework. We can:
? discuss the homework and help them to understand what their teacher is asking them to do
? support reading and maths up to Key Stage 3 (14 years)
? talk through ideas and help them to develop their planning and research skills
? provide basic stationery ? pens and pencils, scrap paper, rulers and calculators
? help them access their school's learning websites
? offer limited printing ? two black and white sheets or one colour sheet per session
? encourage them to review and check their work and advise on presentation
? support revision for exams ? tips for getting organised and reviewing, understanding and remembering topics
? help them find and use relevant information resources, including books and websites
? share books and listen to children read.
? provide access to library computers reserved for Homework Help
Please note
The time given to support individual children will vary according to how busy the session is. Priority will always be given to children with homework.
Young people at GCSE level are welcome to come along to the sessions for general help, computer use and printing, but staff may not be able to provide help with specific subjects.
Other educational activities
If children do not have homework, they are welcome to come and take part in other educational activities such as reading, board games, drawing, colouring and computer games.
The study support worker can only provide and supervise such activities if they are not busy helping other children with homework.
Keeping children and young people safe
Homework Help sessions are held in a designated area of the library where children and young people have access to dedicated library computers. They are drop in sessions and children are free to come and go as they please.
Children may be unsupervised at times: for example, when the study support worker is elsewhere in the library helping children to find and choose books. Therefore, parents or guardians of children aged seven years or under must remain in the library at all times for safety reasons.
Staff will keep an eye on children and young people using computers during the sessions. The computers must be used for educational purposes only. During Homework Help sessions computers cannot be used to view social media websites.
