Welcome Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1939 to provide habitat for migratory birds, to demonstrate sound management practices that enhance natural resource conservation, and to provide wildlife-oriented recreational opportunities. The 46,000-acres refuge is dominated by the longleaf pine-wiregrass ecosystem that provides a mosaic of habitats for wildlife and more than 900 species of plants.

The refuge is part of the National Wildlife Refuge System, a national network of lands and waters managed for the benefit of wildlife and people.

General Information Access The refuge is open every day from one hour before sunrise until one hour after sunset.

During deer and turkey seasons, hunters may access the refuge between 4:00a.m. and two hours after legal sunset on scheduled hunt days.
