5th/6th/7th/8th Grade Boys Basketball Tournament

Presented by Central Youth Sports

General Tournament Information

Schedule: Saturday, January 7th and Sunday, January 8th. Gyms will open up at 8:30 a.m. with games beginning at 9:00 a.m. each morning. Coaches may call (503)838-1471 on January 6th between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. for specific game times if they have not yet been notified by e-mail.

Location: All games will be played at Central High School (1530 Monmouth St.), Talmadge Middle School (51 S. 16th St.) in Independence, and Ash Creek Elementary School (1360 N. 16th St.) in Monmouth.

Format: Priority will be given to teams that are made up of players who are attending a common 4A middle school or lower. Teams feeding into 5A and 6A high schools, and any teams made up of boys attending different middle schools (all-star/select), may be screened out. Each grade level can accommodate up to 8 teams in a pool and bracket format. All teams are guaranteed to play 4 games. All games will have two officials.

Fees & Team entry fee of $185 per team and application must be post-marked before

Admission December 25, 2011 to guarantee entry into the tournament. Entry fee postmarked after this date is $200 per team. A $5 admission charge for adults ages 18 and older will be collected on Saturday and Sunday. Coaches, players and kids under 18 are admitted free all weekend!

Contests & Awards will be given to the Championship and 2nd Place teams in each division. Awards: A combination individual/team shooting contest will be held Saturday. Awards will be given for the top 3 individual shooters and team winner in each grade.

Concessions: Will be sold at the gym. As this is a fund raiser for our program, we ask that no outside food or drink be brought into the gym (except players’ drinks in plastic containers).

Lodging: Motels are available in Monmouth, Dallas (approximately 15 minutes away), and Salem (approximately 20-30 minutes away).

Scorekeepers: Score clock operators will be provided, but teams are required to keep their own scorebook. The home team will be designated as the “official” scorebook, and will be used to settle any discrepancies regarding the score and fouls.

For any questions or clarification please contact Bob Mason at (503)838-1471 or via e-mail at cysbasketball@

Tournament Rules

Sportsmanship: Coaches are expected to monitor (and control) the conduct of their team and the team’s parents. Under NO circumstance is a parent to approach a coach and/or players from the opposing team, or referees, during or after a game. Parents must direct any and all complaints through the head coach. The head coach may then approach the tournament coordinator to address any issues. The tournament coordinator will direct all parent complaints to their team’s head coach.

Coaches: Only the head coach and two assistant coaches will be allowed to be on the bench during the game. All other coaches and/or parents must sit in the stands. Teams will be allowed to have one scorekeeper sit at the official scorers table.

Game time: Four 8-minute stop-clock quarters with a 5-minute halftime. One 3-minute overtime, if needed. Additional overtime periods will be 1-minute in length. All games will begin no sooner than scheduled! If we are behind schedule, warm up time will be cut from 10 minutes to 5 minutes.

Timeouts: One full and one 30-second time out per half. Full time outs do not carry over to the second half.

In event of overtime, NO time outs carry over. Each team will have one (1) 30-second time out for

the first overtime. No time outs may be used for any additional overtimes.

Game Balls: Teams must provide their own game balls. 8th and 7th grades will use a regulation 29.5” ball. 6th and 5th grades will use a 28.5” ball.

Defense: 8th-6th gd.: Teams may play either man-to-man, or zone defense. Teams are allowed to use a full

court press as long as the lead is under 20 points. No backcourt pressure after a 20-point lead.

5th gd.: Man-to-man defense only, no zone defense allowed. Teams may not employ any full court

press or backcourt pressure until final 2 minutes of game if lead is under 20 points.

“Mercy rule”: If lead is over 20 points at the end of the 3rd quarter, the entire final quarter will be running time

(including free throw attempts). If the lead exceeds 20 points at any time during the course of the

4th quarter, the remaining portion of the 4th quarter will be running time (including free throw

attempts). Clock does not stop if the lead goes back down under 20 points. The clock will only be

stopped during time outs.

Fouls: Personal – Each player gets 5 personal fouls and is disqualified on the 5th foul.

Team – 1-and-1 on the 7th team foul; 2 shots on the 10th team foul.

*Technicals – Automatic one point, two free throws, plus possession of the ball. Any player who is

ejected from a game due to receiving two technical fouls will not be eligible to play in any remaining

games. The ejected player’s roster slot cannot be filled with another player.

Scorekeepers: The Central High School basketball program is providing score clock operators for this weekend as a

fundraiser for their program. Please keep in mind that these kids are volunteering their time. Please

have your team’s score keeper sit at the score table to help head off any potential mistakes. If you

don’t have your score keeper sitting at the table, we will not listen to any complaints regarding the

score on the scoreboard.

Tie Breakers: 3-TEAM POOL – Determined by record; 2-0 is 1st place; 1-1 is 2nd place; 0-2 in 3rd place. If all

three teams go to 1-1, then the combined point differentials (15 points maximum per game) will be

used to determine seeding, highest (1st seed) to lowest (3rd seed).

4-TEAM POOL – In the event that three teams end up with identical 2-1 records at the end of pool

play, the following tie-breaker will be used. 1st Place = Win first two games, lose third game. 2nd

place = Win first, lose second, win third game. 3rd Place = Lose first game, win next two games.
