Summer Teaching & Curriculum Internship at
MLC Learning Center – Arlington Hills
Organizational Background The Minnesota Literacy Council (MLC) is a nonprofit, statewide organization that provides literacy services to adults, children, volunteers and community programs around Minnesota. In the metro area, we offer free classes at five different locations for new immigrants and refugees, as well as life-long Minnesotans, who are learning basic English, math or computer skills, or studying for the GED.
Purpose of Position The Summer Teaching Intern position will assist in the classroom two days per week and then ultimately have full responsibility for the class for six weeks. Phase I: The Summer Teaching Intern will work with the intermediate/advanced level Monday/Wednesday teacher as a classroom assistant, for approximately two hours twice per week, plus some planning and/or wrap-up time to communicate with the classroom teacher. Additionally, the Intern will evaluate the existing Intermediate/Advanced volunteer curriculum against revised goals and objectives for a new curriculum. Phase II: The Summer Teaching Intern will teach the intermediate/ advanced level class Monday, May 21st through Friday, June 29th. Additionally, the Intern will continue evaluating the existing Intermediate/Advanced curriculum against new goals and objectives. This is an unpaid internship position.
Qualifications
▪ Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
▪ Previous teaching experience a plus.
▪ Experience creating lesson plans or developing curriculum a plus
▪ Strong organizational and planning skills.
▪ Extremely dependable, prompt and able to maintain confidentiality relating to student records.
▪ Self-directed and self-motivated.
▪ Basic computer, Internet, and office software skills.
Training The Minnesota Literacy Council is proud to offer a 12-hour, state-certified pre-service training for volunteers tutoring or teaching ESL. The Summer Teaching & Curriculum Intern would be requested to take this course at his/her earliest convenience at no cost to the intern. The intern would also be able to attend free in-service workshops of interest.
Location This internship is at MLC Learning Center – Arlington Hills, 1115 Greenbrier St, St. Paul, MN 55106 (in Arlington Hills Lutheran Church).
Time Commitment Phase I: Approximately 10-15 hours per week during June and July with a few longer days to student teach towards the end of July. Phase II: Approximately 10-15 hours per week from May 21st through Friday, June 29th
Responsibilities
Phase I: April 30 - May 18, 2012-
▪ Serve as classroom aide, floating to assist learners.
▪ Prepare basic materials and teach brief lessons.
▪ Student teach a few full classes in advance of Phase II.
▪ Survey existing Intermediate curriculum units; evaluate unit objectives against new goals/objectives
Phase II: May 21-June 29, 2012
▪ Preview and prepare lessons from the scheduled curriculum.
▪ Write lesson reports for each class taught
▪ Teach the intermediate/advanced class for six weeks, Mondays and Wednesdays from May 21- June 29
▪ Maintain learner attendance records.
▪ Survey existing Intermediate curriculum units; evaluate unit objectives against new goals/objectives
