M?tis Nation of Ontario - M?TIS BURSARIES & SCHOLARSHIPS IN ONTARIO M?tis Nation of Ontario - M?TIS BURSARIES & SCHOLARSHIPS IN ONTARIO
MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT LIPINSKI
T he M?tis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is pleased to offer this booklet as a resource that details many of the scholarships and bursaries that are available to M?tis students throughout Ontario. This is by no means an exhaustive list but rather part of an ongoing communication about opportunities which are available to you through MNO Regional Offices, the M?tis Voyageur and MNO's website ().
As a former teacher, I understand that higher education is fundamental to improving the quality of life for all M?tis people, our families and communities across Ontario. Finding ways to assist you in completing your studies is an important part of the work done at the M?tis Nation of Ontario. We are committed to education and skills development for M?tis people. The MNO is actively engaging with Ontario's colleges and universities to build lasting relationships, to raise awareness of the challenges faced by M?tis students and to explore new opportunities
for programs and support for postsecondary education. The recently signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with colleges and universities across the province reinforce our belief that only by working together can we improve outcomes for all M?tis learners and create a forum for dialogue regarding M?tis student needs.
The lack of resources remains a real concern and the increasing cost of tuition and living can be a significant barrier. Currently the M?tis Nation of Ontario has established over 33 interest accumulating bursaries at postsecondary institutions. These bursaries are distributed annually throughout Ontario. This M?tis Bursary Program is one way the MNO is working to reduce the rising costs of education. There is still much more that must be done.
I hope you will find this booklet useful. The information it contains will provide you with the additional information in successful financial planning. MNO wishes you all the best as you pursue and complete your post-secondary education. The M?tis Nation is proud of how far you have come and walks with you in your journey forward.
Sincerely, Gary Lipinksi

M?TIS STUDENT BURSARY PROGRAM
T he M?tis Student Bursary Program was established by the M?tis Nation of Ontario in 2001 to assist M?tis students in their pursuit of post-secondary education. Bursary applications are available to students following registration at their Postsecondary Institution in the Fall. Deadlines are specific to each institution. Bursary recipients are announced throughout the school year depending on the schedule of the Postsecondary Institution. Students may apply for bursaries and/or scholarships each year when they register for school. The amount of bursary money available at each school depends on the accumulation of interest as well as the amount invested for and the institutions administration processes.
Since 2001, more than 884 bursaries with a total value of $750,000 have been awarded to deserving M?tis students.
That money helps M?tis students in Ontario gain the skills necessary to advance their careers and realize their aspirations as well as those of their communities.
If you would like to know more about the M?tis Student Bursary Program, please contact the Awards Office at your Postsecondary Institution, or:

ACCESSING BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS AT YOUR UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE
When searching for bursaries and scholarships here are some helpful tips to help guide you:
Contact your MNO Regional Employment and
Training Coordinator ? Each of the 9 regions in Ontario has a regional office which can assist your search for scholarships and bursaries funding. The MNO Education and Training Branch has funding programs designed to help students in 1 or 2 year postsecondary programs. Your regional Coordinator can also assist you in exploring MNO program options or helping you find bursaries and scholarships that you may not have thought of. They would be happy to speak with you about your training and education needs.
Create a Profile ? Bursaries and scholarships are often
awarded to students with particular needs, skill sets or specific attributes. One way to help you find bursaries and scholarships that are specific to you is to create a profile of yourself. This profile is a list of your personal attributes
and can include sports you play, volunteer activities, interests that have guided your education pursuits, languages you speak, ethnicity and identity, and struggles you have overcome in your life (i.e. any learning/physical/ mental disabilities). Once you have created a list, try to search for organizations related to each of these attributes to see if they have scholarships or bursaries specific to your circumstances.
Visit your Financial Aid or Awards Office ? Often
the best way to find out what scholarships and bursaries you are eligible for is to go and speak with someone at your postsecondary institution's Financial Aid or Awards Office. Searching your institutions financial aid or awards website is also helpful, although speaking with someone face-to-face can often clarify information found online. Each year there are awards that are not given out because there were no applicants who met the criteria. Don't miss out on an opportunity because you didn't apply!
Visit your Departmental Office ? Most faculty
departments at postsecondary institutions have administration offices with full time staff devoted to assisting students. Many departments have funding available to assist students who need assistance covering the costs of travel to conferences and other academic events throughout the year.
