Message Stick: Talking Stick: Law And Justice

Sunday, 24 May 2009

Message Stick presents a new series of studio chat programs called Talking Stick. In this series, presenter Miriam Corowa speaks

to Indigenous and non-Indigenous insiders to discuss six topics of interest to all Australians.

From the vexed subjects of Aboriginal health, education and justice, to national and international success in sport and music

and the impact of climate change on communities across the country, Talking Stick provides a candid assessment of the state of

the Indigenous nation.

In episode three, Law and Justice, Miriam and her guests consider how Australia is to be judged when it's clear that the most

vulnerable and disadvantaged group, Indigenous Australians, are also the group most likely to be found in our increasingly

overcrowded prisons. Miriam speaks to three specialists who work tirelessly to break this cycle and bring some sense of hope

that there is a positive alternative to incarceration.

This week’s Talking Stick panel are Dennis Eggington, Chief Executive Officer of the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western

Australia since 1995; Professor Chris Cunneen, one of Australia's leading experts on Indigenous crime, punishment, and juvenile

justice; and Colleen Murray, EO of the Tirkandi Inaburra Centre which assists ‘at risk’ Indigenous teenage boys to avoid the

juvenile justice system.

Message Stick: Talking Stick: Law And Justice will be repeated on ABC2 – Monday, May 25 at 5:00pm

Michael Palin: Around The World In 20 Years

Sunday, 24 May 2009

Michael Palin celebrates the 20th anniversary of his TV classic, Around The World In 80 Days, in this one-hour special.

One of the most memorable segments of Michael’s famous circumnavigation was the open dhow voyage from Dubai to Bombay. As he

said goodbye to the crew and their trusted boat, the Al Shama (meaning candlelight), Michael made a forecast. “At this point”,

he said, “it is impossible to accept that I shall never see them again”.

Michael goes in search of that very same dhow and its captain and crew. He begins in Dubai, which has now transformed from a

dusty trading port to a mini-Manhattan, and reacquaints himself with the city. He then meets two officials who helped organise

the original voyage. They don’t know what has happened to Captain Hassan Sulyman, however, and there have been no sightings of

the dhow in Dubai in 20 years. But Michael has more leads to follow up.

His search moves to Bombay. Fortunately, the broking firm which handled Al Shama’s cargo all those years ago is still in

existence. Its new owner, Digant Joshi, agrees to ask around. This gives Michael an opportunity to take a second look at the

city in which he arrived first time round as a rather unshaven and exhausted traveller. He takes his laundry to the open-air

dhobi-ghats, wonders anew at the daily miracle of the tiffin-wallahs and has a brief encounter with a Bollywood mogul.

Eventually, Joshi has some answers.

The good news is that the captain and some of the crew are living in a village called Mandvi in Gujerat Province, north-west

India. The bad news is that Al Shama sank just five months before Michael’s arrival. He hastens north by rail and is delighted

to discover that Mandvi is a completely unspoiled town, given over entirely to the construction of wooden dhows.

go on and the hours ticking down, Megan, Max, Shane and Caz urgently try to avert the threatened sabotage whilst reassuring a

wary Hong Kong bank.

Megan finally discovers why she can never find copper and in doing so, realises that she may actually hold the key to CCR’s very

future.

And just when it seems Megan and Brian will finally discuss their feeling for each other, a serious road accident in the UK,

Compass: The Retreat Pt. 3

Sunday, 24 May 2009

This series allows viewers an inside look at the spiritual side of Islam. Three British men and three British women leave their

lives behind to embark on a soul searching, thought-provoking and life-changing journey.

The British Muslim community is diverse and encompasses many ethnic groups. This program aims to break some of the stereotypes

and misconceptions surrounding the Islamic faith. Made up of people from a variety of backgrounds, the group includes lapsed

Muslims, casual followers, recent converts and the totally uninitiated, all seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the faith.

Spending four weeks living in a Muslim retreat, in a beautiful but remote Islamic madrassa in Andalusia, Spain, the group will

follow a more traditional, slower pace of life. As well as being offered guidance by the school, they will also meet with key

teachers of Islam from the UK. Their focus will be to worship Allah, and to become more thoughtful, gentler, kinder individuals.

But with strict rules to follow and none of the comforts of Western living, the road to enlightenment is not going to be easy.

Daily filming and personal video diaries give us a true insight into the thoughts and feelings of our contributors as they

undergo this amazing experience.

As the six volunteers enter the final week of their Islamic odyssey, they must cope with the self-imposed privations of Ramadan

– the most Holy period in the Islamic calendar. If life on The Retreat has been tough, it is about to get even tougher. As well

as keeping to the intense daily routine of prayer, silent contemplation and spiritually uplifting activities, the group must now

also fast from sunrise to sunset.

Cornered, Ros convinces MI5 head, Harry Pearce (Peter Firth) and Adam Carter (Rupert Penry-Jones) that the only way to stop

Yalta, and for her to redeem herself, is to exploit her position as a double agent and find out exactly what the operation

involves.

needs for its operation and Jo (Miranda Raison), Malcolm (Hugh Simon), Connie (Gemma Jones) and Ben work against the clock to

Artscape: Artists At Work: Alasdair Macintyre

Tuesday, 26 May 2009

Artscape: Artists At Work invites you behind the suburban roller door into the curious garage studio of Brisbane-based artist

Alasdair Macintyre. Here you will be introduced to Macintyre’s carefully constructed figures and dioramas.

A visit to Macintrye’s studio is a suburban foray into a clever and highly satirical world of creative play where aliens invade

art galleries, great artists attend the ‘Last Supper’, and characters from Star Wars ponder Picasso’s ‘Guernica’.

“Currently my practice is concentrated on this series called Splatsville,” explains Macintyre. “It’s a whole world unto itself.

It’s like The Shock of the New meets Sesame Street - it’s art meeting mainstream children’s visual culture.”

Having just finished work for an exhibition at Brisbane’s Ryan Renshaw Gallery, Macintyre is ready for his next project. Artists

At Work follows him as he creates a sculpture that signifies a daring new shift in scale. Breaking away from the miniature

dioramas, Macintyre decides to make a life-sized sculpture for exhibition - not at a local gallery - but at the local St

Stephen’s Cathedral.

The decision is perhaps not so surprising when we learn that Macintyre is also a practising Catholic and lecturer in art

history, and that the project gives him the opportunity to toy with questions underpinning his two great passions - art and

religion.

Placed in scenarios where pop culture collides with art history, mythology and religion Macintyre’s witty, toy-like figures are

shown to be more than capable of begging amusing but nevertheless large philosophical questions.

The Chaser's War On Everything

Wednesday, 27 May 2009 New Series

VINCE COLOSIMO TO STAR IN AUSTRALIAN VERSION OF “THE OFFICE”

Acclaimed Australian actor Vince Colosimo will star in a new local version of The Office, the smash hit comedy created by Ricky

Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The series, which has been commissioned for 13 episodes by ABC1, will be the third incarnation of

the show following the phenomenal success of the UK and US versions.

“This is complete bullshit,” said Vince Colosimo. “This is clearly just a shameless attention-grabbing exercise by The Chaser in

a desperate attempt to draw attention to their press release.”

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant have so far not commented on the Australian rumours, mostly because no one has asked them to.

“But I would say this,” said Stephen Merchant. “I can confirm that The Chaser’s War on Everything is definitely returning to

Australian screens on Wednesday 27 May at 9pm on ABC1.”

Gervais said he’d never actually heard of the show, but confirmed that the new series would run for 10 episodes, and would once

again feature the core Chaser team of Andrew Hansen, Chas Licciardello, Julian Morrow, Craig Reucassel and Chris Taylor.

Chaser Executive Producer Julian Morrow said, “Please don’t falsely attribute any quotes to me. It’s slightly plausible that

Colosimo, Gervais and Merchant gave real quotes, but no one would ever believe that I did.”

The new series of The Chaser’s War on Everything is a mockumentary comedy about a deluded office boss who manages a small

regional branch of a paper manufacturing company in Slough.

“No, that’s also bullshit,” said the Head of ABC-TV Arts, Entertainment and Comedy Amanda Duthie. “To be honest, the only reason

we’re doing another Chaser season is because Chris Lilley didn’t have anything ready for this year. Even another series of Mondo

Thingo would have been a better option, but we’re stuck with The Chaser for now.”

The 10 episode series will see the team escalating their assault on Australian politicians, business leaders and the media, and

they also have plans to expand the war beyond our borders, taking aim at unsuspecting targets in the USA, UK, Japan and

Liechtenstein.

The Chaser’s War On Everything will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, May 28 at 8:30pm

The program is a co-production between the ABC and Chaser Broadcasting. The ABC Executive Producer is Sophia Zachariou and the Chaser Executive Producer is Julian Morrow, so any negative reviews should specifically name them.

The Ascent Of Money: Dreams Of Avarice

Thursday, 28 May 2009 New Series

Where did it come from? And where did it all go? In this fresh, revelatory series, historian and Harvard Professor, Niall

Ferguson, reveals everything you need to know about money.

From Shylock’s pound of flesh in Shakespeare’s Merchant Of Venice to the loan sharks of Glasgow; from the ‘promises to pay’

written on Babylonian clay tablets to the Medici banking system; Ferguson explains the origins of credit and debt and why credit

networks are indispensable to any civilisation.

The Spanish were responsible for one of the first versions of money in the form of coins made out of the sliver discovered in

Bolivia in 1546. In Mesopotamia 4000 years ago, they used clay tablets as promissory notes, and this system, a system of mutual

trust, is the root of credit, or credo which means ‘I believe’.

Northern Italy became the birthplace of banking when Jewish money-lenders made loans to people and charged interest. Christians

weren’t permitted to charge interest, but this was eventually overcome by the introduction of foreign exchange dealings. In the

15th century, credit moved out of the Jewish ghetto and into banks (named after the benches (bancos) the money men used to do

their trading).

The Italian Medici family became the very first foreign exchange dealers, and became so rich and so powerful that they virtually

paid for the Renaissance, and financed various feudal state wars of the time.

One of the downsides of the credit system is evident in modern day Memphis, Tennessee - the bankruptcy capital of America.

Bankruptcy is what happens when people can’t afford to repay debts, and we discover that some very famous and eventually

successful people were once bankrupts themselves, including Mark Twain, Buster Keaton, and Henry Ford.

Silent Witness: Death's Door

Friday, 29 May 2009

Harry (Tom Ward) acts as mentor to a young, eager medical student, Holly Farr (Naomi Bentley), and is quickly charmed into

involving her in his latest case - the post-mortem of a woman found dumped on the side of the road with her face skilfully

removed. With no DNA or missing persons match, Nikki’s (Emilia Fox) skills are called upon to reconstruct the victim’s face. But

it is Holly who immediately recognises her as Fran Price, a once successful TV presenter and journalist. She quickly becomes

enthralled by the media coverage of Fran’s murder, and Harry worries that she may have betrayed his trust when supposed forensic

discoveries are leaked to the press. Then Holly is found dead, more than likely murdered by Fran’s killer.

With his protégé dead and the team themselves in danger, Harry is reeled into the murky world of Russian oligarch Oleg Kovik.

Kovik claims Fran Price’s murder was ordered by the Russian Government and Leonid Polyak, and that he’s the next target.

Distrustful of the police and of Kovik’s intentions, Harry becomes determined to find the missing clues that will reveal the

real reasons behind Fran and Holly’s murders. With the assistance of his very able new bodyguard, he manages to find the

contents of the book Fran was writing, revealing that Kovik is not the honest businessman he portrays himself to be. However,

before Kovik and his hired assassin are apprehended, their ultimate target, Polyak, is found dead in the back of a prison van,

more than likely poisoned by a deadly toxin.

New Tricks: Spare Parts

Saturday, 30 May 2009 New Series

With new evidence, advances in forensics and some slightly unorthodox policing methods, Superintendent Sandra Pullman (Amanda

Redman) and her Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS) are back reinvestigating the unsolved murders and cold cases the

London Metropolitan Police has long since filed away.

Brought out of early retirement, Jack Halford (James Bolam), Brian Lane (Alun Armstrong) and Gerry Standing (Dennis Waterman)

continue to prove that there’s still a place for old-fashioned policing. They may be eccentric, bend the rules, ignore

procedure, follow their hunches and take risks, but they get results. It’s down to Superintendent Sandra Pullman to keep her

team on the right side of the law.

In this new series, the team faces some tough challenges. There are huge professional and personal stakes at play when Ricky

Hanson (David Troughton) stands trial for the attempted murder of Jack Halford; Standing faces the consequences of lying to his

‘daughter’ Emily; Pullman has to reconcile herself with the truth about her late father; and Lane’s old demons come back to

haunt him as the repercussions of the trial begin to hit home.

The team is forced to overcome personal obstacles in an attempt to maintain business as usual. Cases involving the death of a

radio DJ in an arson attack, a prostitute who received an unexpected windfall in a client’s Will and an actor’s death on stage

during a performance are among the investigations that also test the team.

Sunday Arts

This week on Sunday Arts we take a look at the evolution of Indigenous Australian photography over the last century.

Indigenous Australian Photography

In recent times, the history of Indigenous Australian photography is a subject that has been the centre of many books and exhibitions, and this week on Sunday Arts we take a look at this rich and diverse history. We turn first to images of Indigenous people from the 19th century, including the negative portrayal of Aboriginality in the press, and the contrasting image of the ‘noble savage’. Brenda L Croft takes us through the development of Indigenous photography in the 1980s as well as the beginnings of the Boomali Art Cooperative, of which she was a founding member. The focus then turns to the work of contemporary Indigenous photographers Fiona Foley, Christian Thompson and Diane Jones and the way that their work questions ideas about representation and identity.

Talking Heads: Adam Shand

This week on Talking Heads Peter Thompson is joined by journalist Adam Shand who, despite never having written about crime, promised his media bosses he’d crack the story of Melbourne’s gangland murders.

Shortly after Jason Moran was shot dead in front of his young children at a football ground, Shand ventured into the inner circle... mixing with the drug-dealers, the thugs and the murderers.

What did he make of the men who would be portrayed in the TV series Underbelly? And what effect did this journey into the criminal badlands have on Shand himself?

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors brings you the latest from the world of Australian invention, innovation and design. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: designer and inventor Sally Dominguez, materials engineer Veena Sahajwalla and futurist and author Mark Pesce. Inventions featured on the program:

Invention 1 PIPE BOSS – by inventor Mike Stratford-Smith from QLD. PVC pipe is usually cut with a hand saw and then bevelled manually with a file. The process is time consuming and requires the use of two separate tools. Often people resort to using a high-speed saw, creating an acute risk of serious injury when cutting pipes at angles. The Pipe Boss is a power tool for safely and quickly cutting and bevelling pipes. The invention comprises a single saw blade interposed between a pair of bevelling tools. The combination of two tools in one significantly saves time, as cutting and bevelling can both be undertaken in a single pass of the tool. You simply line up the marked end of the pipe with the cutting sights, and then rotate the pipe to perform both tasks simultaneously. The Pipe Boss is also designed to greatly reduce the risk of dangerous injuries whilst cutting pipes, compared to a cut-off saw. Pipe Boss – a safer, faster and better way to cut pipes.

Invention 2 GUARDAHEEL – by inventor Dr David Huber from NSW. Pressure ulcers, or bed sores, occur when a part of the body is resting against a surface for a considerable period of time. These ulcers can escalate into a serious problem if they become severely infected, and can even be fatal. In an operating theatre, where patients may be immobile for several hours, a considerable amount of weight can be placed on their heels. The heel is a particularly bad place to get a pressure sore, as the bone is so close to the surface of the skin that any infection can rapidly spread to the bone. Surgeon Dr David Huber’s GuardaHeel is designed to elevate a patient’s heel in the operating theatre, without restricting circulation to the leg. The invention cradles the calf, whilst ensuring the leg is safely extended to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis. GuardaHeel is reusable, latex free and impermeable to liquids, so that it can easily be cleaned with hospital grade disinfectants and incorporated into standard surgery. GuardaHeel – surgery just got a little safer.

Invention 3 AVANT GARDE – by inventor Wayne Barrett from QLD. Caravan design hasn't advanced significantly in recent times. Most caravans are vulnerable to rotting, rusting, corrosion or fading. The Avant Garde is a luxury recreational vehicle, which is the only caravan constructed using composite resin transfer moulding. This construction method, currently utilised in the production of aircraft, supports structural load by using an object's external skin, rather than using an internal frame covered with a non-load bearing skin. The caravan is built as a two-piece moulded unit, the lower half incorporating the chassis, with a completely moulded interior. A bonding technique is then used to produce one moulded mass. Applying this construction method to caravans provides greater strength, sound and thermal insulation, prevents dust and water intrusion, and significantly improves the aerodynamics and efficiency of the caravan. Avant Garde – driving caravans into the future.

Catalyst

Drought Culprit

Australia - land of extreme weather, of droughts and flooding rains. For nearly fifteen years, Victoria has been locked in a drought that has defied all expectations and been made worse by record heat-waves. The result, the deadly bushfires that caused such loss earlier this year.

For some time meteorologists have looked to the Pacific and the Southern Ocean to predict the cycle of rain and drought. Over the past sixty years Australian rainfall has dwindled. In the same period there have been more drought-causing El Niños and fewer rain-making La Niñas from the Pacific. Meanwhile global warming has pushed the Southern Ocean cold fronts that deliver winter rain further away from the continent. But even these well studied weather patterns don’t completely explain the Big Dry. Now climate scientists have a different explanation. As the impact of global warming bites, they urgently need to re-think weather forecasting to understand the future climate. Mark Horstman investigates the Indian Ocean as the culprit for our most severe drought on record.

CMT Disease

Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is thought to help ward off colds. It also protects against scurvy, a disease common among sailors before the mid eighteenth century. If current trials in Australia prove successful it may also be used to treat one of the most common neurological diseases called Charcot Marie Tooth Disease. This is a genetically inherited disease and affects the functioning of the motor and sensory nerves in the arms and legs. In 2004 a landmark French study on mice with Charcot Marie Tooth Disease, showed that Vitamin C not only improved nerve function but it could also reverse the condition. Dr Maryanne Demasi meets a family who are taking part in the Vitamin C trials.

Fingerprints

What has Dr Paul Willis got in common with the most famous detective duo, Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson? All three of them know that even the smartest criminal may leave his fingerprints at the scene of a crime. Forensic science has made vast progress since Sherlock Holmes first looked through his magnifying glass, but until recently lifting fingerprints off some materials like paper has been time consuming and expensive. Our trusty sleuth, Dr Willis, meets two students who have come up with a very simple solution which could help finger the felons.
