Memorial Day 2022 Flags Go Up On The Road

Charlie and Santa Cannon pose with two flags about to be hung on the road.

One hundred fifty four years ago the first national observance of Memorial Day, then called Decoration Day, honoring the Civil War dead was celebrated on May 30, 1868. By order of Gen. John Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, a Union veterans group, the graves at Arlington Cemetery were strewn with flowers by orphans. After World War I, all American war dead were remembered. Later on, Decoration Day was renamed Memorial Day

and in 1971 it was moved to the last Monday in May, continuing a tradition to honor those who have fallen in battle fighting for American values and way of life.

This year Memorial Day is on Monday, May 30th. There will be few chances to pay your respects locally during the long holiday weekend:

This Saturday May 28th beginning at 12:30 pm the Mayor's Committee of Roxbury will be the kick off spot

That magnificent display of American Flags from Roxbury to the tip of Breezy Point once again adorns the main road. Thanks to Rosie & Greg Seminara, and Santa Cannon who assisted her beloved Charlie "Good Guy" Cannon and their son Richie for turning the main road into a tribute to our country just in time for Memorial Day. Due to the inclement weather as of late, they only had two days to cover the three and a half miles of road.

For those who may not be aware more than a decade ago, Francis Ignatius Walsh from Roxbury started all this by putting flags on the telephone poles along the road by Roxbury. Since then a group of patriotic citizens led by Charlie Cannon got involved and extended that line of flags to the main gate. Then the Rockaway Point Association provided funding to cover the Rockaway Point section of Breezy and finally a very generous and anonymous donor had the group continue that line of flags to the very end of the Point. That stretch of 120 flags from the beginning of Roxbury to the end of the Point is certainly a wonderful sight to behold and significantly enhances the beauty of our community.

Thanks to all those involved for

such a spectacular display. A special thank you to Kim Leib from the Breezy Point Hardware Store, who not only was able to obtain the flags in these challenging times but provided them at cost and also donated many of them.
