Investing in the Free Market

Assignment

The stock market is the ultimate symbol of American capitalism. In order to gain an understanding of this integral component of the Free Market System, you will participate in the Virtual Stock Exchange Competition. The simulation will provide you with an opportunity to become an investor in the market by trading shares of common stock and creating a stock portfolio. Remember, capitalism is based on the premise “survival of the fittest.” Consequently, there will be only one Stock Market Champion! The competition starts March 6th and ends on May 31st. Portfolios are due on June 1st. Good luck! (

Process

1. Follow the directions to sign up for the game on MarketWatch

2. Invest $10,000 in common stock traded on U.S. exchanges. You must hold a minimum of four stocks in your portfolio at all times and your cash on hand may never exceed $500.

3. Record each transaction on a Stock Holding Form.

4. Track your investments using the Stock Portfolio Earnings Chart & Performance Graph.

5. Create a Stock Portfolio comprised of the following components:

• a typed Cover Page that includes the title of the competition, a visual portratying the stock market, the names of investors and team name with period number;

• a computer generated, or carefully hand drawn Stock Portfolio Earnings Chart and Performance Graph

• a minimum of four computer generated, or carefully hand drawn Stock Holding Forms; one for each stock that you have owned at any point during the game

• a typed Portfolio Analysis that assesses the performance of your portfolio by examining three significant holdings, including detailed company backgrounds, explanations of transactions, and rationale for stated capital gains or losses;

** Extra credit points are awarded to investors that place in the Top 5 of the class; 10 points to the winner, 5 points to second, 3 points to third, 2 points to fourth, and 1 point to fifth

** Points are deducted from the portfolio grade should investors not hold a minimum of four stocks and/or cash on hand exceeds $500 at any time during the simulation;

** Individual investors are responsible for researching, purchasing, managing, and completing the Holding Forms for a minimum of two stocks. All other work should be divided in an equitable manner (ie…Cover Page, Earnings Chart & Graph, and Portfolio Analysis, other Stock Holding forms).

The New York Stock Exchange Web site offers stock news and educational
