Critical EL Tools - Michigan

Critical Tools for Newcomer English Learners in Secondary For EducatorsThis resource is designed to help access instruction and complete academic tasks for secondary English Learners(ELs) who are newcomers and/or have beginning levels of English proficiency. Parents and guardians of ELs may also find it to be helpful. It is intentionally not an exhaustive list; rather, a few resources carefully selected by an EL Advisory subcommittee that will enable students to access content while they are learning English, particularly in a virtual or blended learning setting. This document can be modified to meet students’ individual needs. The student’s teacher may want to further narrow the choices below so that students are targeting specific resources. Keep in mind that different tools are provided to support different technological devices/platforms. All these tools are available to students for free. Ideally, students should receive guided practice detailing how and when to use each resource before being expected to use them independently. This document is not meant to support lesson planning, nor does it negate the need for instructional supports for ELs in the general education setting.
