Courses

At Linkonlearning we offer our students 9 different subjects to our students. These subjects include the following:

Math

Spelling

Language Arts

Reading

Writing

Science

Social Studies

History

Geography

When your child is registered for Linkonlearning they have access to all subjects that are offered to their grade. Children do not need to be signed up by the subject. However certain subjects are only offered to a few grades. Others are offered to all 10 grades. Here is a breakdown of what courses are offered in each grade.

  |Math |Spelling |Language |Science |Social Studies |History |Geography |Reading |Writing | |1 | | | | | | | | | | |2 | | | | | | | | | | |3 | | | | | | | | | | |4 | | | | | | | | | | |5 | | | | | | | | | | |6 | | | | | | | | | | |7 | | | | | | | | | | |8 | | | | | | | | | | |JK | | | | | | | | | | |SK | | | | | | | | | | |

You will notice that Math, Spelling, Reading, and Writing cover all 10 grades. Language Arts, and Science include material for grades 1 through 8. Social Studies include grades 1 through 6, and then History and Geography pick up from there and cover grades 7 and 8. For example, if your child is in grade 3, you will not be given the option of having them study History or Geography at a grade 3 level because these are subjects that are only offered at grade 7 and 8 levels. A student cannot be enrolled in Social Studies at the same time that they are enrolled in History and Geography.

Grades

In order to make sure that your child is getting the most out of their Linkonlearning education, you have the ability to select the most appropriate grade for every subject that is offered to them. For example, if your child is currently in grade 2 and excels at Reading, Writing, and Spelling, but has difficulty with Math and Science, you can place them in different grades for each subject. You could place them in grade 3 for Reading, Writing, and Spelling, since they do so well in those subjects. You could then place them in grade 1 if they are having a great deal of trouble in Math. A student’s grade can be changed at any time; however this can only be done by the administrator of the account. View Choosing Grades and Levels below for a step-by-step explanation of how this is done.

Levels

You also have the opportunity to specify the way in which your child will learn. Since every child learns at a different speed and in a different way we have established three different levels through which students can learn. Our levels are as follows:

Beginner

Intermediate

Advanced

Each level is customized to a different type of student.

A beginner student is one who needs more time to understand concepts. This level represents a review of the previous grade and the introduction of some new concepts for that particular grade. Students who are struggling with a subject need to review previous material in order to allow them to start working on a new concept at the beginning level of that grade. This allows them to practice the new idea until they understand the concept and are able to work through the lessons with ease and understanding. This builds self-confidence and allows them to advance comfortably to the next grade.

The intermediate level represents an average learner. This level builds on a concept that has been mastered in previous grades and introduces all the topics that are standard to that grade. This allows students to gain a deeper understanding of general grade concepts. This level is consistent with expectations for that particular grade. You will find at this level new concepts that are introduced which will flow with the previous skills that have been taught.

The advanced level represents the highly developed learner of that particular grade. Topics are challenging and informative, allowing students to become more knowledgeable in each area of course study. In this level students are exposed to all appropriate grade material, as well as introduced to some future grade concepts as a means of challenging them with thought provoking ideas. Students will use all available skills to complete these tasks, many of which are of a problem-solving nature.

How do students advance through the levels?

It is very important for parents to understand what is included in each level. Since every student learns at a different speed and in a different way, we want to tailor the learning process to each student. As such, each unit is created three different times. Each of those is suited to a specific level. Within each level the same material is taught. The only difference between the levels is the way in which the material is taught. Beginner teaches the same material as intermediate, and the same material as advanced. The three are simply taught in different ways. That means that students DO NOT GO THROUGH ALL THREE LEVELS for one unit. If they did they would be learning the same thing three different times. A student who is enrolled as a beginner will learn all the same material that an advanced student will learn. It will just be taught to them at a slower pace.

Can students move between the levels?

Similar to selecting grades, parents can specify what level their child should be in for each subject. That is done at the same time as the grade is selected. For example, if your child is in grade 3 and excels in Reading, Writing, and Spelling, you can register them for grade 3 advanced in those subjects. Or you could even move up a grade and register them in grade 4 intermediate, or even advanced if they do exceptionally well. However if their Math marks are suffering you can register them in grade 3 beginner Math, or even move them down to grade 2 intermediate Math if you felt it necessary. The decision of what level they should be at is completely up to you. A student’s level can be changed at any time, however this can only be done by the administrator of the account. View Choosing Grades and Levels below for a step-by-step explanation of how this is done. If your child begins at an intermediate level and you find that they are not being challenged at all by the material please feel free to bump them to advanced. Or if your child is finding their level too difficult please feel free to move them down to an easier level. The lessons are not titled by grade or level, so the student cannot see if they have been bumped up or down, other than seeing that none of the lessons have been completed in the new grade/level.

Choosing Grades and Levels

To place a student in a particular grade and level, or to change their grade and level, the administrator must enter the site at . From there, click on the Login button. A new screen will appear with a blank space for you to fill in your Login ID and Password. Type your Login ID and Password in the spaces provided and click on the login button. A new screen will appear that will welcome you to the administrative section of Linkonlearning. Click on the Administration button. Once you have done that a new screen will appear that will list your name and your child’s name. Click on your child’s name. If you have more than one child registered with Linkonlearning, click on the name of the child whose account information you wish to change.

Once you have done this, a page will open up containing the student’s account information. This will contain their name, age, email address, hobbies, prizes and points. It will also contain a list of all 10 subjects that Linkonlearning offers to its students. Next to the column of subjects there will be a column that is titled Grade, and next to that will be a column that is titled Level. To change a student’s grade or level in any subject, simply click on the scroll bar at the side of the page and find the subject that you wish to change.

Once you have found the correct subject, click on the arrow next to the grade for that subject, and select a new grade from the drop down menu. Then move over to the level for that subject, and again, click on the arrow and select a new level from the drop down menu. The grade drop down menus will only include the grades that are relevant to that subject. For example, Math will list JK through grade 8 on its drop down menu, while Geography will only list grades 7 and 8. Remember that Social Studies only go up to grade 6 and History and Geography only begins at grade 7. A student cannot be enrolled in Social Studies at the same time that they are enrolled in History and Geography, as History and Geography are a continuation of Social Studies.

You may change as many grades and levels as you wish at any time. After you finish with one subject, simply go to the next subject and repeat the process. When you are done you must click on the SAVE button at the bottom of the page in order for your child’s account to be updated.

When you have saved your changes you will automatically be taken back out to a previous page where you could select whose account information you wished to view. At this point your child can access their new grades and levels for each subject. Remember, your child can be registered in different grades and different levels for each subject.

*Linkonlearning will not automatically advance your child at the beginning of a new school year. No changes will be made to your child’s account information, with the exception of updating their age as their birthday passes. You are responsible for changing your child’s grade and level at all times.

Linkonlearning Classroom

When a student wishes to enter the Linkonlearning website they begin by clicking on the Login button on the main page of the site. A smaller window will appear with blank spaces for the student to type their Login ID and their Password. They will then click on the login button and a new page will open up showing the Linkonlearning classroom. The Linkonlearning classroom is similar to a student’s homepage. Everything can be accessed from the Linkonlearning classroom.

At the top of the page there are 4 doors. Each of these doors leads to a different part of the site. The door closest to the Linkonlearning logo allows a student to enter the classroom. This door is useful if the student has left the classroom and moved to another area. The second door allows students to enter the library. The third door takes students to the report card section, and the fourth door takes them to the recess area. By running their mouse over each door they will be able to see where the door leads them by looking under the Linkonlearning logo on the left. To enter a new area they simply need to click on the appropriate door. Points are displayed on the top right corner of the classroom window. Points are earned by completing lessons and extra curricular activities, and can be redeemed for prizes. (For more information, please see Points section below)

What’s in the classroom?

There are many areas that the students can access from the classroom.

In the classroom there is a chalkboard, a bulletin board, a teacher, and four students. At the top of the chalkboard there is a space for the Word of the Day. Every day, when the students enter their classroom they will see a different word of the day. By simply clicking on the word they can access its definition and an example of how it is used.

Next to the Word of the Day the student will see the Date.

Below the Word of the Day the student will see a note welcoming them to class, and a list of all the subjects that they have access to. For more information on working on a subject please see Working in Linkonlearning’s Classroom below.

On the bulletin board there is an area for General Announcements, which Linkonlearning will post for students to read. To read the announcements they simply click on the white paper on the bulletin board.

The classroom allows access to Linkonlearning’s Online Help. By clicking on the teacher in the classroom a bulletin board will open up. The student simply types their question in the space provided to post messages. The questions will be picked up by the teachers who will respond. The students simply need to check back later for the response to their question. Students will receive a response within 48 hours of posting their message. When students are done they can close the bulletin board and return to the classroom.

Working in Linkonlearning’s Classroom

Students have access to all of their subjects by clicking on the course name on their chalkboard. Once the students have selected a course the chalkboard will display all of the available units in that subject.

[pic]

A Linkonlearning unit is one topic within that particular subject. The list of units on the chalkboard will include the unit number as well as the unit title. For example, if your child were in grade 7 and they wished to work on Math they would simply click on the word Math on their chalkboard. At that time they would see the following:

Unit 01 – Decimals

Unit 02 – Integers

Unit 03 – Multiples and Factors

Unit 04 – Perfect Squares and Square Roots

Unit 05 – Review of Units 1-4

Etc…

[pic]

If at any time a student wishes to return to the main classroom to switch subjects or view another area, they can simply click on the back button at the top right corner of the chalkboard.

We do not require students to begin with Unit 01 and work in order through the units, however we highly recommend for subjects such as Math and Spelling that students work in order. For those subjects in particular each unit carries through to the next and therefore it would be increasingly helpful to the student if they worked in order. You will notice that Spelling and Math both include review units. These appear after approximately every fourth unit. These review units consist entirely of review questions from the previous four or so units and their purpose is to reinforce the material that has been taught.

Linkonlearning Units

Linkonlearning topics are very specific. Each unit covers a specific topic as opposed to a group of topics at once. This is evident in the way the units are set up.

Each unit includes 3 elements. These are as follows:

An instruction page

Approximately 5 lessons

A test

The instruction page appears at the beginning of the unit. When a student clicks on the unit they wish to work on a list will appear on the right half of the chalkboard. It will look as follows:

Instruction page

Lesson 1

Lesson 2

Lesson 3

Lesson 4

Lesson 5

Test

Unlike the units, the lessons within a unit must be completed in order. A student will not be able to open Lesson 3 until Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 have been completed. As well a student must open the instruction page before they can open Lesson 1.

Linkonlearning Instruction Pages

The instruction page contains all of the information that the student learns in any particular unit. If a student is learning about how to use a comma in Language Arts, the instruction page for that unit will explain what a comma is, when it is used, and show some examples. The instruction page is where the student learns all of the information needed to answer questions relating to the unit topic. There are no questions in the instruction page. All the questions are found in the lessons. Instruction pages also include sound. The sound can be accessed at the beginning of each paragraph, or anywhere that the green sound icon is seen. By clicking on the sound icon the student can have the instruction page read to them.

[pic]

Linkonlearning Lessons

Once a student has read or listened to the instruction page they may proceed to Lesson 1. This can be done by clicking on the link to the first lesson. It can also be done by clicking on the lesson directly from the classroom chalkboard. A new screen will then open and the students will be ready to begin the first lesson.

Students will notice that there is no information in the lessons. All of the information is found in the instruction page. The instruction page can be easily accessed by the button on the orange navigation bar at the top of the page that says “click here for instruction”. This allows students to check back on information in the instruction page whenever they have a question.

[pic]

How are the questions answered?

Students complete a lesson by reading the questions and filling in the answers. Questions can be made in many forms, called templates.

Templates:

Multiple choice - Students must click on the correct answer or answers.

Fill in a blank - Student must type the answer on the blank line.

Drag and drop – Students must move their mouse over the object that is to be repositioned and click down on it. While clicking down they drag the object to its new location and then take their finger off the mouse button, effectively dropping it in its new location.

Drop down box – Student must click on the drop down box and choose the correct answer from the list displayed.

Word search or highlight - Student must again move their mouse to the correct place, then click down and hold the mouse button down while they drag the mouse to its resting place. They then lift their finger from the button and either a word or letter will be highlighted.

Matching columns - Students click one of the answers in the first column and drag a line over to the related information in the other column, then drop the line by letting go of the mouse button.

How is a lesson marked?

Once a student has completed a lesson they click on the submit button at the bottom of the page and the page will be automatically returned to them, marked. They will receive a mark, a percentage out of 100%, and the number of points that they receive for that lesson. Correct answers are displayed with a green check mark, and incorrect answers are displayed with a red X. The percentage that they receive will then be recorded on the chalkboard next to that lesson. This will allow them to see what lessons have been completed the next time they are in the classroom. Any lessons that have not been finished and do not have a percentage recorded next to them will have “Not completed” next to them. Once students have received their marks they have the option of going back to the classroom, re-doing the current lesson or moving on to the next lesson by clicking on the appropriate link at the bottom of each lesson page.

[pic]

How can I redo a lesson?

Linkonlearning students have the option of re-doing lessons once they have been marked. This gives them the opportunity to master a topic and receive higher marks for those lessons. However, redoing a lesson, will not delete the previous mark received. As well, students do not earn any more points when they redo a lesson. Every time a student submits a lesson, their mark and answers are recorded in their report card, including multiple attempts at a lesson. Parents and students can then enter the report card area of the site and view every lesson that the child has completed. For more information on the report card please see Linkonlearning Report Cards. When a student completes a lesson for the first time and submits it, it returns with their mark. They may then advance to the next unit or go back to the classroom and redo the lesson.

Linkonlearning Tests

Once a student has finished all of the lessons in a unit they may proceed to the test section of that unit. They can access the test by clicking on the test on the classroom chalkboard, or by clicking on the link at the bottom of the previous lesson. The test is a review of the material that the students have learned in the unit. It does not contain any new material. It consists solely of questions, similar to those the students completed during the lessons. The biggest difference between the test and the lessons is that the test is attempting to determine how much information the student has retained through the unit. That means that the student will not have access to the instruction page. The link that was available at the top of each lesson page will be disabled for the tests.

How are the tests completed?

The tests are completed the same way lessons are completed. For instructions on how each template works, please see Templates above. Once the student is finished their test, they must click on the submit button, and like the lessons, the sheet will be returned, marked and with a percentage. At that point they may exit to the classroom chalkboard again and either continue with the next unit or go back to the main classroom.

Report Card

The report card outlines all of the lessons completed by each student, and how many attempts were made on each of those lessons. The dates and times completed, as well as the lesson mark is displayed on a chalkboard under each subject. Simply click on the subject, unit and level to display the lessons completed in that area. If the student received a mark lower than 100%, they can redo the lesson by clicking on the view/redo button in the classroom. The completed lesson can by viewed by clicking on the VIEW button beside that lesson in the report card.

[pic]

Points

Completing lessons, tests, and extra curricular activities accumulates points. Points received from lessons and tests are calculated based on the student mark on each lesson or test. Each percentage obtains 1 point. For example, if a student received 83% on their lesson, they would receive 83 points. 10 Bonus points are given for a perfect lesson or test (equaling 110 points for a 100% mark). Points are also given for completing extra work, including creative writing, keyboarding, projects, reports, essays and many more activities. You will find the points in the top right corner of the student’s linkonlearning window (You must be logged in to view the student’s points).

[pic]

There is a prize page found within the recess area where students can redeem their points for prizes. All of the prizes won are recorded in the student’s portfolio. Once a prize is awarded, the points are immediately deducted from the student’s report card, and on the top right corner of the classroom. It is up to the student whether to cash in frequently for smaller prizes, or to save their points for a larger prize. (Prizes awarded by points based on value). If there is a defect in the prize received, please email prizes@ and outline the problem. The damaged prize will then be replaced. Linkonlearning does not warrantee any of the prizes. Damage must have occurred during the shipping process.

How points are submitted for prizes – You will find the prize page in the recess area. If you click on it, you will see a page listing all of the prizes available, as well as the amount of points each of them is worth, and a dollar value. To submit your points for a prize, click on the prize, and fill in the required information. Prizes can also be purchased through by sending an email to prizes@ with the prize number, user name, address and phone number. Prizes will be shipped upon receipt of payment, or upon verification of points. Please see the Registration section to view payment options.
