Spanish Three Fall 2012

Derrumbando Fronteras

¿Cómo es nuestro mundo?

Course Description

Spanish Three gives you the opportunity to use Spanish to understand and explain the world around you. We will examine the cultures of various Spanish-speaking countries around the world in an effort to see both their similarities and differences. We will use authentic sources such as newspaper and magazine articles, videos, and podcasts to explore the current state of music, movies, sports, fashion, politics, literature, and other aspects of culture.

We will, of course, do this while at the same time strengthening our Spanish skills in preparation for the LOTE exam. Be prepared to speak exclusively in Spanish for the entire year.

Materials Needed

1. Notebook and/or binder for Spanish class only

2. Pen or pencil

3. Spanish-English dictionary to use at home

Grading

Tests/Quizzes/Projects 60%

Homework 20%

Participation 20%

Tests/Quizzes/Projects

Written tests and quizzes will be given periodically to monitor your learning. They will be scheduled ahead of time, and I will tell you what you will be expected to know. I will also assign projects that will allow you to demonstrate your learning in various ways. You will always be given some choice about your project and will have ample time to complete it.

Homework

Homework will be assigned every day and will be due at the beginning of class on the due date. As per ELRO policy I do not accept late homework.

Participation

The only way to learn a new language is to use it as much as possible. You will be expected to speak exclusively in Spanish every day.

Absences

In order to do well, whether in Spanish or any other subject, you must be in class every day. When you are absent you miss out on everything that we’re doing that day, and just getting the notes from a classmate cannot make up for what you’ve missed. If you do need to be absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and to get the necessary assignments as soon as you return to school. Make-up work is due the day after you return.

Essential Questions for Spanish Three

1. Why is circumlocution important in communication?

2. If “a person who knows two languages is worth two people,” why aren’t we all proactively learning more languages besides English?

3. How is the structure of a language connected to cultural perspective?
