General Description: Organic Chemistry 211 is the first semester of a two-semester sequence in organic chemistry which introduces the chemistry of organic compounds. The laboratory, CHML 211, is normally taken concurrently with the lecture, but is a separate one credit-hour course requiring separate enrollment and grading.
Text: Organic Chemistry, Sixth Edition by John McMurray. Also highly recommended is the Study Guide and Solutions Manual for Organic Chemistry, Sixth Edition, by Susan McMurray. It is very important that you are able to check your answers to assigned problems with the study guide. Both of these books should be available in the bookstore.
Grading Policy: There will be four 45-minute exams, each at 100 points and one comprehensive final exam at 100 points. The top three scores from the 45-minute exams will be averaged with the cumulative final exam. The lowest 45-minute exam will be dropped. An absence at a 45-minute exam counts as the dropped exam. There will be no make up exams. The 45-minute exams will constitute 75% of the grade and the final will constitute 25% of the grade. Exams 2- 4 will likely contain one review question from the previous test (not necessarily an identical repeat, but a very similar question).
Tentative grading scale:
|Average |Grade |
|90-100 |A |
|80-89 |B |
|70-79 |C |
|60-69 |D |
|< 60 |F |
Attendance & Homework: Attendance is expected, but not officially monitored for grading purposes. Homework problems will be assigned, but not collected. Actively working on the homework problems allows you to test whether you understand the material and serves as a review guide for the exams.
Academic Honesty: No form of dishonesty will be tolerated. Further details may be found in the current Student Handbook, Code of Student Life and in the Faculty Handbook.
