Start with a blank paper (square paper works best) – Block/Bubble letter your nameUsing a straight edge/ruler draw three lines (all coming together/intersecting close to the center) See my example belowOutline in a dark color – ADD Color next Option one – color all triangle spaces with one color from the color wheel – IN ORDER (red – orange – yellow – green – blue – purple)Option two – color the BACKGROUND spaces in the triangle space in the above listed order THEN color the block/bubble letter inside the triangle space with the OPPOSITE color or COMPLEMENTARY color*I did option 2! Spring SnowflakeOverview: Using symmetry in Art Estimated Time: 20 - 25 minutes or more if you likeMaterials Needed: Paper & ScissorsActivity Explanation: This activity will use symmetry, shapes, and paper cutting to create a Spring Snowflake (since we barely got any snow this winter!!)Idea Examples: Don’t limit your ideas to the example…expand your vision and creativity…it is the process that helps you become a better artist and above all ENJOY! Start with a blank paper (SQUARE, thin, computer paper works best!) Even a Coffee Filter would work! Fold your paper/filter in half and in half as many times as you can, then begin cutting shapes from the sides/middle of the folded paper/filter – when done cutting, carefully open up to reveal your beautiful Spring Snowflake! Symmetrical Name DesignOverview: Using symmetry in Art Estimated Time: 20 - 25 minutes or more if you likeMaterials Needed: Paper, pencil, crayon/color pencil/markerActivity Explanation: This activity will use your name to create a unique artworkIdea Examples: Don’t limit your ideas to the example…expand your vision and creativity…it is the process that helps you become a better artist and above all ENJOY! Start with a blank paper (thin, computer paper works best!), fold the paper in half (long way), have the folded part at the bottom (near your belly), have the open part at the top, away from youAt the bottom of the page, write your name as big as you can (touching the fold!) SEE my photo below (I wrote in cursive you can use print/block letters) Trace your name in a DARK color marker, Unfold the paper, refold the opposite direction and trace your name in marker (seeing through the paper!) Unfold the paper again – you may need to retrace your name to see it equally as bold ADD designs and details around your Symmetrical Name design in color pencil or crayon! Positive/Negative CollageOverview: Using shapes and symmetry in art to highlight the Positive/Negative spaces Estimated Time: 20 - 25 minutes or more if you likeMaterials Needed: Paper, pencil, scissors, glue, crayon, color pencil, etc.Activity Explanation: This activity focus on creating a mirror opposite image using paper collageIdea Examples: Don’t limit your ideas to the example…expand your vision and creativity…it is the process that helps you become a better artist and above all ENJOY! Start with two blank papers (Same size, different colors), Cut one paper in halfFrom the long side of the ? paper cut out a big unique shape, flip the shape (see photos below) to line up in mirror image, continue to make cuts from the middle, long side & continue to flip the shape to create a mirror imageWhen out of space, carefully glue all pieces into placeOPTIONAL- add patterns/designs into spaces (try to keep them symmetrical) Observational Drawing: Draw what you SEE!Overview: Stay Inside or Go Outside and Draw what you seeEstimated Time: 20-25 minutes or more if you likeMaterials Needed: Paper, pencil and a solid surface to draw upon (book or clipboard)Activity Explanation: This activity will help you become a good observer of the world around you.Idea Examples: Don’t limit yourself to the list…expand your vision and just draw…it is the process that helps you become a better artist and above all ENJOY!Go outside and draw a tree with all the wonderful texturesGo outside and look up at the clouds rolling by and sketch out what you see in the formations (Look closely as the clouds change and move-what else do you see?)Go outside and draw your front or your back yard…yes…this is a Landscape!Not outdoor weather…stay inside and draw your pet (if you have one) while it is sitting still or sleepingNo pet…how about sketch a picture of your sibling or parentNeed something that sits still…set up objects in your room (toys, shoes, cups, even a crumpled pair of socks will make a great subject for observing…etc) - this is a Still Life (because it sits still)Have a good time Observing your World!Complementary Color Op ArtOverview: Creating an Optical Illusion using the Complementary ColorsEstimated Time: 20 - 25 minutes or more if you likeMaterials Needed: Paper, pencil, crayon/color pencil/markerActivity Explanation: This activity will help you review the Complementary Colors from earlier this year in art.Idea Examples: Don’t limit your ideas to the example…expand your vision and creativity…it is the process that helps you become a better artist and above all ENJOY! Start with a blank paper, lightly put a dot towards the middle of the paper, using a ruler (or straight edge/box/cardboard), add lines intersecting through the dot (going edge to edge) Make sure you create an even number of spaces with the lines, add curved lines going towards the dot in every other space, add curved lines going away from the dot in the opposite spaces, add COMPLEMENTARY colors (opposites on the color wheel: Blue & Orange, Red & Green, Yellow & Purple) in a stripe/every other space pattern, add shading like the image below to enhance the illusion that the spaces are concave/convex Personal Logo DesignOverview: Creating a LOGO that represents YOU!Estimated Time: 20 - 25 minutes or more if you likeMaterials Needed: Paper, pencil, crayon/color pencil/markerActivity Explanation: This activity will help you create a unique artwork.Idea Examples: Don’t limit yourself to anything on the list below…expand your vision and creativity…it is the process that helps you become a better artist and above all ENJOY!Start with lined paper – create a BRAINSTORM list of all your favorites & anything that describes you (Ex. colors, sports, hobbies, food, music, movies, initials, animals, etc.)Using a blank paper begin to develop ways to use items from your list to create a symbol/LOGO to represent YOU!Below are some popular logos you may have seen – what do they have in common?
