Key Question Week 4: What keeps you grounded?

Key Text for Linked Learning: Formal letter from Mr Andrew Newton.

Linked Learning: English and Science

In Science this week, children will receive a letter from Mr Andrew Newton from the British Scientific Society which invites them to get creative and

explore forces and magnets. Children will recap their learning from the past three weeks on forces to help them plan and conduct their own

investigations based around magnetism. In English this week, children will read a formal letter, identifying features of language and layout

features. They will then link their science findings together with their writing skills to write a formal response to Mr Andrew Newton including

complex sentences and correctly punctuated questions.

Maths: This week the children will revisit measures and data by looking at length, weight and bar charts. They will measure lengths in mm, cm, m and

cm and record, and then convert from cm to mm and cm to m. They will also find a difference between lengths. After spending two days on this the

children will look at weight. They will establish weight benchmarks (1kg and 100g), make estimates, order, and add weights. They will learn to read

scales to the nearest 100g and will record results in a bar chart. At the end of the week, the children will choose appropriate units of measurement

to measure objects. They will then collect, record and interpret data in a bar chart when one step represents several units.

Science: See above

History: Children will continue to learn about the mummification process using historical terms.

Geography: Children will identify the northern and southern hemispheres as well as locating where North and South America are on a world map.

Computing: Children will identify safe habits online and discuss how we can keep ourselves safe.

Music: Children will look at a piece of atmospheric music (Charanga) and discuss the term layering, focussing on what it means and what impact it has

on the music. Children will continue to learn recorders. ( To be taught at a later date)

Art: Children will focus on the skill of sketching with ‘The Sunflowers’.

Design Technology: Children will make their pulley system. ( To be taught at a later date)

PDW / R.E: Linking to their computing work, children will have a growing understanding of how to keep safe online.

P.E: This week in P.E. children will learn how to how accurately using push and pull throws. They will use a range of different throwing techniques.

MFL: In French, children will learn how to greet others and state how they are feeling in short exchanges.

This week the home learning pack will continue to be organised to coincide with the online Zoom sessions, the structure of activities is just a suggestion and you can of course teach and work through the pack however you like. There will also be a few optional extra activities at the end of the pack.

I will also be uploading videos which can be accessed at any time of myself reading the class novel ‘The Creakers’. There are multiple videos on there , you have to select each different ‘topic’ to view them. The website Flipgrid is pictured below and the join code is

English

Before Christmas we spent some time in school looking at vocabulary for different purposes. We are going to revise that today exploring formal and in-formal language.

Spend some time reading these below with an adult and decide which is formal and which is informal and why.

Can you find examples in the text of formal and informal language?

Can you think of any alternate ways to say the same thing?

[pic]Maths

Time to start thinking about mass again. To remind ourselves all about Kg and g I have an investigation for you. Get a selection of items from your kitchen. If you have scales you can choose anything and weigh it your self ( preferred option) If not, choose items with the weight on the packaging. Then complete the tasks below.

1. Can you order them by estimation first? Which is heaviest and which is lightest.

2. Are bigger in size objects always heavier than smaller objects?

3. Can you convert some of the weights from g to kg and kg to g? Create a chart to organise your findings. Remember that there are 1000g in 1 kg.

History

We are thinking about mummification again this week! Now, you read a little bit about it last week so now it’s time to role play! Follow the slides below step by step and pretend to mummify either yourself, a family member or a toy/teddy. First, go through all of the slides and make a list of the things you need ( or closest substitution). Then perform your pretend mummification! Have fun and send me some photos!

Science

We are contining to think about forces and this week we are introducing magnets into our investigations. Today we are going to reflect on what we have learnt already and think about what we would like to find out next. Complete the grid below.

Science / English

We have received the letter below and I thought we would definitely be able to help!

Task 1: Read the letter and begin to think of ideas how we could help.

Task 2: Can you identify the features of a letter? I am not going to give you a list of features this time, as we have done this before. Time to get thinking! You can label and annotate the letter below.

Maths

Now that your brain is back into thinking about mass I have some problems to solve for you.

History

I hope you had fun role playing mummification! Now it’s time to write your own set of instructions step by step. It is important that you use lots of technical vocabulary such as natron, Canopic jar, book of the dead etc.

I would like you to create a flow chart which shows step by step instructions! You could write this or type it up.

Useful link about the afterlife:

Geography

I am sure you are able to locate th equator on a world map but can you explain hemispheres? Using your atlas or an online atlas ( linked below) can you comlete a chart which lists some countries which are in Northen Hemisphere and some from the Southern Hemisphere?

English

After receiving our letter ( and analysing the features) I would now like you to think of some questions you would ask Mr Newton as he doesn’t give much information about himself or his organisation. When you write your list of questions remember to punctuate them correctly and use a variety of openers.

[pic]

Maths

Today you are going to plot some data onto a bar graph, we haven’t practised this much in year 3 so you might need an adult to help you. There is also an Oak National lesson linked below for help. Your task is to weigh some items in your home and then plot them on a bar graph like the one below. If you don’t have any scales use the weight on the packaging.

Oak Academy lesson:

Geography

Using your knowledge from yesterday and the Oak National lesson below I would like you to create your own report on what the equator and hemispheres are. Not a written report , but like a news report or an interview to explain everything. You could use pictures and maps to help you explain. You could record it and send it to me too!

Science

Time for our first magnetism investigation. I would like you to plan and conduct your own simple test to answer the question below! You do not need to present your findings on paper, as we will discuss it during our zoom. But, there is a sheet below to use if you would prefer to. You might want to enhance your investigation by using different magnets and different objects to test them with and compare results.

English

It’s time to begin our response to Mr Newton. The letter will have two parts to it. The first being our initial response and to ask him some questions and the second will be to share our science investigation findings.

I am sure you found all of the features of a formal letter on Tuesday. In zoom I will model write to show you how to begin your letter. It is going to include:

Address

Date

Formal greeting

Purpose of the letter

A complex sentence

At least one question.

We will add the rest and complete our letter tomorrow.

Maths

You have 2 tasks today. Your main task is to collect more data for a new graph. This time you are measuring in cm. You can choose what you measure and record, the image below suggests index fingers, but you may want to choose something you have more of at home. Remember when measuring to make sure you are using the cm edge of the ruler, not the mm. Remember to start from 0.

Science

Time for magnetic investigation number 2! Just like yesterday, plan conduct and analyse your own small investigation to answer the question below. Make sure you can remember your results, we will need to tell Mr Newton about them. There is a sheet below if you wish to use it, but you don’t have to. Please share some photos with me too!

Art

We are going to practise a new skill, cross hatching. It is a method of shading a pencil drawing. It creates shadows and texture to a drawing when done correctly. Be careful! It isn’t just scribbling, each line is placed in a certain angle to gain effect so take your time. I will model the technique to you during our Zoom lesson.

Your task is to practise cross hatching and then attempt the shapes below by following this youtube lesson. There are some more shapes to practise if you wish to.

Computing

Let’s be SMART.

You will have seen this poster all over school and will have had lessons and assemblies about our SMART rules since you were in reception. Below there is a link to a very useful website where I would like you to watch the short videos to remind yourself what each letter in SMART means. There is also a quiz and an option to watch it as a full movie. Please watch chapters 1-5 as a minimum.
