NEWSLETTER Autumn 2015

Also available from Reception in printed form.

The Patient Participation Group (PPG) at Queenswood Medical Practice compiles this newsletter in cooperation with Practice Manager Caroline Eggleston and the Partner GPs.

Please ask Reception if you would like to join the PPG or know more about how you can be involved: our principal aim is to promote cooperation between the Practice and its patients so that everyone benefits.

Minutes from PPG meetings are on the website under Practice Information: queenswoodmedicalpractice.co.uk

The next PPG Meeting will be on Thursday 3 December at 6.30pm in the Queenswood Medical Practice in the baby clinic room.

Practice News

New Arrivals

Welcome to our two new GPs Nicola Higgins and Shweta Patel; to our two new trainee GPs Rakesh Modi and Myles Simpson; and to our new Nurse Emma-Leigh Johnson.

Returning…

Welcome back after maternity leave, and congratulations, to GP Catherine Steven (a girl, Wendy), and Trainee GP Lucy Langford (a boy, Sam).

The GP Team

By October 2015, the Queenswood will have a total of 17 GPs on the team.

A Named GP for Everyone

All patients have now been allocated a named GP. If you’re not sure who your named GP is, ring the surgery to check, or e-mail:

queenswoodmedicalpractice@

This e-mail address is monitored twice a day, and it’s for non-urgent matters or questions: for example, cancelling appointments, asking for repeat prescriptions or medication requests, and forwarding medical correspondence.

Flu Clinics start Mon 21 Sept at Queenswood. There will be two Saturday Clinics on 3rd & 24th Oct 8.30am-3.30pm.

Meningitis Vaccinations

For babies born after 1st May 2015 the vaccine is free.

A different vaccine is free for 13-18 year olds. Going to university? Get your free vaccination before you go, or sign up with a GP at uni and get vaccinated there.

New Services at Queenswood

Starting soon: a Warfarin monitoring anti-coagulation Clinic two sessions a week.

Reception & Admin Staff

April Williams looks after the day-to-day running of Reception and all the people on whom we rely for our appointments, our prescriptions, handling our phone calls, dealing with our results, and all other important admin matters. One of the admin apprentices has now been taken on full-time.

---------------------------------------------

The practice is looking for someone to be our Champion for Older Patients’ Wellbeing.

Why is this role needed?

Older people get less access to mental health services than they should. Psychological therapy can really help, and a Haringey project is up and running to improve the situation. So we’re looking for a volunteer from among our patients who would give a few hours a month to support the project for the Queenswood: someone who cares passionately about mental health and wellbeing, wants to make positive changes within the practice and has good communication skills. It doesn’t matter what your age is. Contact April Williams at Reception if you want to know more.

Saturday Clinic Opening Hours

In order to be seen on a Saturday you need to have opted to have a Summary Care Record – ask at Reception about this, if in doubt. The clinic is held at

Christchurch Hall Surgery

20 Edison Road, Crouch End, London N8 8AE T 020 8340 2877

A Doctor is there from 9am – 4pm, and

a Nurse from 9am – 12pm.

Note: This clinic is running on a trial basis and is re-evaluated 3 monthly.

Pre-Booking Appointments

Please note that around the 15th of each month, the following calendar month’s pre-bookable appointments are made available online: queenswoodmedicalpractice.co.uk

Appointments from 6.30pm

The Practice is open later every evening Monday-Friday to offer appointments to patients who find it difficult to come during the core opening hours due to their work commitments.

These extended hours are for pre-booked routine problems. Appointments are all pre-bookable by phone or online.

Each evening there is at least one GP and one Practice nurse/health care assistant covering this late clinic and appointments are offered up until 7.20pm for the GP and 7.30pm for the Practice nurse.

On the Queenswood website you can arrange appointments, request repeat prescriptions, send messages to the practice, or view a summary of your medical record.

Ask at Reception to register for an account.

You can also self refer to a number of places such as physio and antenatal.

There are many details about various external agencies too.

-------------------------------------------------

For Emergencies after 6.30 and at weekends

If you have a serious medical emergency such as chest pain, collapse, difficulty with breathing, significant bleeding or life threatening childhood illness, always call the 999 ambulance service first and speak to a London Emergency Ambulance advisor.

Otherwise, when the Queenswood is closed, an out-of-hours service is supplied by Barndoc. Provided by local GPs, this service includes telephone advice, visits to a local surgery, or an emergency home visit if that is considered necessary.

Please call 111 for ‘out of hours’ service and advice. Visit NHS111 for more information.

---------------------------------------------------

The Electronic Prescription System

Most prescriptions, including repeat prescriptions, can be sent electronically, direct from Queenswood to any pharmacy you choose.

To register for the system, see your pharmacist and tell them you want to get electronic prescriptions from Queenswood. Once you’ve filled in the form and brought it to Reception, you won’t have to take prescriptions to the pharmacy: they will be sent there for you.

Do you have some feedback for the Queenswood Practice?

We welcome your feedback to help us to improve our service. Please complete the ‘Friends & Family’ Test on the Queenswood website. If you have time, visit the NHS Choices Link too, to give detailed feedback.

Praise, constructive criticism, ideas – all are welcome.

And Finally…Smell the Coffee!

David and Gabriel are serving good coffee and healthy food at the Hornsey Central Café. It’s a welcoming place to meet up, too.
