DEFEAT: The Devil’s Treat

Galatians 5:1, 7, 16, 17, 18

Galatians 5

1Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

7You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?

16I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

17For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Introduction:

Do You feel defeated today? Do you find yourself “spinning wheels?”

1. The Cause of Defeat

A. War In Our Lives

Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

B. Emotions Rule Instead of God

1). Humans are emotional

[EX] Missionary comes with pictures, stories, etc. and it’s easy to give commitments – but a few months later we’re not as emotional!

2). Same thing with choir members, S. School Class, etc.

3). Living by Impulse

[EX] Buying groceries based on hunger (too much or too little)

Page 2

4). We can’t go on emotions all the time….

a) Our emotions will fool us

b) Our emotions are up and down

[pic]

C. Wrong Reasons For Involvement

1). Pleasing self instead of God

[EX] Wanting to be a preacher so bad that you try on your own – it won’t work!

2). Working for the praises of others

a) Easy to be defeated when no one ever pats you on the

back

b) We should be working for the praises of God not man.

c) We shouldn’t be working for decorations of man but the

crown that God is going to give us when the race is

over!

3). Thinking You Are Special!

[EX] Some think they are the only ones that can do a certain work for God, but friend, God will get His work done. If you won’t use your talents for His glory, He’ll find someone who will.

[pic]

D. Double mindedness

1). Don’t know which way to go or what to do?

[EX] Man who was a good worker: painted the barn, put up the fence, but couldn’t sort the potatoes.

Page 3

2). No clear cut goals – No vision – No hope!

3). No definite principles or priorities.

- doing many things but never getting anything done

4). Taking the easy way out – just don’t make any commitments

at all!

a) Seems easier not to make commitments than to try to

fulfill them

b) Easier to bury talents than to use them to glorify God

James 1:8 A double minded man [is] unstable in all his ways.

IF ONE DOES FALL IN DEFEAT, IT’S BETTER TO WAKE UP AND GET THINGS RIGHT WITH GOD AND GET DOWN TO BUSINESS THAN NOT DO ANYTHING!

[EX] Peter

2. The Cure For Defeat

A. Make Up Your Mind

Romans 8:35 – 39

35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”

37Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

38For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,

39nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Page 4

B. Be Consistent

- Don’t let the pressures of this world stop you or slow you down

spiritually!

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

C. Be Tenacious

1) Like White on Rice

2) Like Sweet on Sugar

3) Like Stink on a Skunk

[pic]

3. Defeat Is The Devil’s Treat

A. Don’t Let Anything Hinder You

Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

B. Don’t Let Bad things that happen stop you:

1) Was John defeated while exiled on Patmos?

2) Was Shadrach, Meshack, and Abendago defeated when cast

into the firey furnace?

3) Was Jesus defeated when he was hanged on the rugged

cross?

4) The situation may look bad – but if you’re in God’s will,

you’ll be OK

Page 5

C. Strength Comes From Trials

[EX] The armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mt. Sier were coming against Israel and Jehosaphat declared:

2 Chronicles 20:12 O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”

THEN…….They began to sing “Praise the Lord for His Mercy Endures Forever”, etc, etc,

[pic]

4. God Specializes In Victory

A. If There’s No Battle – There’s No Victory

B. I’ll tell you where to get your strength and victory:

1) When you’re like Noah – everybody around you eating, drinking, making merry and mocking you while you are doing God’s work – KEEP ON NAILING!

2. When you’re like Joseph – family and friends turn against you, you’re lied on, you’re falsely accused – Just keep on doing right! One day you’ll reign with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

3. When you’re like Joshua – the enemy is big and numerous and the walls are high and thick – Just keep on marching – The walls will come crashing down!

4. When you’re like Daniel – and even society and laws are against you – Keep on Praying! - The devil won’t destroy you!

5. When you’re like Paul & Silas – You’re bound in the chains of life – Just keep singing the praises of the Lord – The chains will fall Off!
