AARP Tax Aide Returns

AARP will once again be assisting senior residents with their taxes this season at the Parks & Recreation Building.

This program's goal is to offer complimentary tax preparation help to anyone regardless of age, but emphasis for those over 50 years of age, who cannot afford to have professional assistance in preparing and processing their taxes. Twenty volunteers work each day to assist Southfield residents during the 11 week program. These volunteers are trained and IRS certified each year.

Sessions will be scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from February 5 through April 11. All appointments will take place in the Marcotte Room of the Parks & Recreation Building. Underground parking is available providing easy access to the Marcotte Room.

New this year, clients can register for an appointment online at You can call the Adult Recreation Center 50+ at (248) 796-4650 to register as well. Hourly appointments are available beginning at 9:30 am with the last appointments accepted at 1:30 pm. Online registration will begin on December 15.

Commission on Senior Adults Chairperson's Update

2017 was an exciting and productive year for the Southfield Commission on Senior Adults (COSA)! The Commission did not let its small size deter it from pursuing large goals. COSA's bylaws authorize a membership of fifteen; however, for most of 2017 there were fewer than ten members. These are the members of COSA:

Karen Schrock, Chairperson Kendell Murphy, Vice-Chairperson

Earlene Traylor Neal, Secretary LaTina Denson Harmen Guenther

Marilyn Hauger Mitchell Simon Denise Stewart Sheryl Walker

By the time this edition of the Scribe is published, there may be additional members. Due to turnover in membership because of relocation of members, changing priorities, etc., we always encourage residents who are interested in our work to complete the Boards and Commissions application which can be found on the City's website. This creates a pool of potential nominees when a vacancy does occur. Members of COSA are appointed by the City Council. We continue to invite residents to our monthly meetings which are held on the third Thursday of each month from 4-6 pm in the Parks and Recreation Building.

Our major work continues to focus on moving Southfield toward becoming an "Age-Friendly Community" as defined by AARP and the World Health Organization. There are eight work groups meeting to address the domains of livability which include housing, transportation and others. Your input is needed to ensure that plans developed represent the aspirations of seniors in our city. After our community wide kickoff event in May, we held a Community Conversation in late September to begin acquiring community input. Several more Community Conversations will be held this winter and spring. Please take advantage of the opportunity to shape the future for seniors in the City of Southfield by participating in these meetings.

Remember that an "Age-Friendly" community is really a "Livable" community for all ages and people of all abilities. Let's work on the future together!
