Home to the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, made up of the Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre, the hospital is a leading academic health science centre with a breadth of research that spans from bench to bedside and populations. Education is provided to health-care professionals in 29 academic disciplines, including both undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees.

Annually the hospital hosts approximately 695,000 ambulatory visits, and cares for more than 25,000 inpatients in over 450 beds. More than 16,500 surgeries are performed and the critically ill are treated in 58 ventilator beds in four separate intensive care units. We are currently building the new Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower, which will have enlarged inpatient facilities including intensive care units for cardiac and medical-surgical patients and five additional state-of-the-art operating rooms.

St. Michael's Hospital seeks an outstanding leader with strong clinical, academic, administrative and interpersonal skills, with experience and knowledge regarding recruitment and support of academic surgeons. Also required is a record of peer-reviewed research and/or leadership in medical education. The chief will be responsible for clinical and academic matters within the department and will foster excellence in patient care services.

The qualified applicant shall hold a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent, be eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario and have status to warrant appointment at the rank of associate or full professor at the University of Toronto.
