USE OF POWERPOINT (ADDING VISUAL MEDIA)

? Some churches prefer visual media with their presentations. ? Offering these pastors a Gideon presentation that includes electronic

visuals may increase our opportunities to make a presentation in these churches. (Thus, we may be able to take our message to a larger percentage of the Christian population.) ? Our philosophy still places the appeal and power of a talented Gideon presenter above the impact of electronic media. ? PowerPoint is allowed to supplement your presentation, but it does not become your presentation. ? Your PowerPoint should not be the focus of the congregation's attention. We want them to see it, but it should not be full of animation or other "bells and whistles" that could be distracting to the viewer. ? You represent The Gideons International, and you are participating in the church's worship service. PowerPoint is simply a tasteful backdrop.

WHO SHOULD USE POWERPOINT?

? PowerPoint should only be attempted by Gideons already well versed in how to prepare and assemble a PowerPoint presentation. (While the use of appropriate pictures in a Gideon presentation can have a powerful impact, inappropriate pictures, or technical problems encountered in using PowerPoint, can result in a disastrous presentation that could close the church door for future presentations.)

WHEN CAN YOU USE POWERPOINT?

? The use of PowerPoint is subject to the following limitations: The pastor authorizes the use of PowerPoint when your presentation

is arranged. The church uses similar technology regularly in the environment

where the presentation will be made.

The church has all of the necessary equipment (computer, projector, screen, speakers) and personnel to facilitate the use of PowerPoint.

NOTE: The purpose of these limitations is to incorporate the use of visual media into the normal flow of the church--not to make the Gideon presentation an unusual event in the church. The use of media for the presentation must fit seamlessly into the church's program. The service is a time of worship, and The Gideons should seek to enhance the congregation's worship experience.

A CHALLENGING TOOL

? Even if you're well versed in using PowerPoint, it may be challenging for you to use in a Gideon presentation.

? Advancing slides is a primary concern. Most likely, you will not control the computer system--nor will your prayer partner.

? You are not allowed to record your voice into the PowerPoint and have it run on its own.

? You should not be signaling someone to advance the program for every slide. (Doing so is annoying and detracts from the emotional power of your presentation.)

? The PowerPoint is a backdrop only. It will run behind you as you speak, and its graphics won't match what you're saying every second of your presentation. (Most of the time you will not be able to precisely time the image or text on the screen with what you are saying. That is expected. So don't worry too much about it.)

HOW TO USE POWERPOINT THAT WILL SERVE AS A VISUAL BACKDROP

? Never refer to the PowerPoint in your presentation. (You will not be looking at it, or reading off the slides.)

? Design your PowerPoint with no more than two stops--only two occasions at most where someone must advance the PowerPoint by clicking the mouse.

? If you must stop and start the presentation at all (and you don't have to include any stops), please do so in two places:

After the Attention-Getter/Opening Testimony and before the Informational Statement. (This will allow you to time the slides that go with the first testimony and the first few slides of the informational statement.)

Acts 5:20

Just before the last slide. (This allows you to time the appearance of our Gideon logo, name, and web address with your final "thank-you" to the congregation and pastor.)

NOTE: If you are speaking at a church with a media person who will be assisting you, then you need only to coordinate a maximum of two cues with that person. Your cue may be a simple nod of the head, gentle gesture with the hand, or perhaps you will want to write down the key phrases where the media person must "click" for you. ? If the PowerPoint malfunctions for any reason, you must keep going. Complete your presentation within your original time limit. (You don't get any extra minutes because the PowerPoint didn't work.) IMPORTANT: For presenter qualification, your PowerPoint must be submitted with your presentation outline!

QUALIFYING TO USE POWERPOINT

? If you would like to use PowerPoint to supplement your Gideon message, you must qualify to use it, just as you must qualify to present a traditional Gideon church presentation.

? Use only approved slides from the library in the TGI Resource Center. NOTE: If you cannot compose a PowerPoint presentation with only these slides, then you will not be able to qualify to use PowerPoint in a church presentation.

? You must submit a copy of your PowerPoint slides with your written outline. (The outline and the slides must be approved together.)

? Use PowerPoint in your graded presentation. IMPORTANT: To be qualified to use PowerPoint to supplement a church message, you must use the PowerPoint as part of the qualifying message.

? If you have already qualified to conduct traditional (non-PowerPoint) church presentations under the current guidelines, and later wish to add PowerPoint to your presentation, you must re-qualify using PowerPoint.

? If you seek to qualify as a church presenter and conduct your graded presentation using PowerPoint--but the review team doesn't believe that your PowerPoint meets the necessary standards (or you need more practice using it)--you can still be qualified to conduct Gideon church presentations without PowerPoint.
