The Seigneurial System

Seigneurial System

The seigneurial system refers the way in which land was divided and used in New France. Basically, land was given to a seigneur (or owner). It was his job to divide the land into equal plots and rent the land to habitants who would farm the land. Both had specific duties to perform (see p. 50 for more information)

What did the Seigneurial System look like? Carefully read and follow the instructions below, and create an accurate diagram of the Seigneurial system in New France.

1) Draw the St. Lawrence River running along the bottom of the page.

2) In the top 1/3 (third) of your drawing space, label the area uncleared bush (forest)

3) Divide the remaining land into 10 long, narrow strips of equal size that run vertically from the uncleared bush to the river.

4) Draw 8 houses, 1 church, and 1 flour mill on the 10 strips of land.

5) Be sure to include a legend and title for your sketch.
