Angel Tree Program – The Christmas trees that will hold all the ANGELS for the Angel Tree Program are here! There will be 150 angels on two Christmas trees! Look for them by the front and south entrances. Each angel represents a child that you can help have a Merry Christmas. Children in the program are all different ages. They are as young as babies all the way up to teenagers.

Choose an angel hanging on the tree. Read what it says on the angel. It will tell you the age of the child and if it is a boy or girl. Buy that child a Christmas gift of small (stocking stuffer), medium, or large value. Spending guidelines tell us to please, keep the cost under $25. All gifts must be unwrapped. Put the angel on your gift and bring it to the Salvation Army on Court Street OR to the Sunday school office at Trinity. Bring your gifts on or before Sunday, December 16. Absolutely NO later than that!

Show Jesus’ love by sharing! U can make a difference!

PLEASE NOTE! There is a very important practice on Sat., Dec. 15!! Meet in the church sanctuary at 10:30 AM. There will be a sloppy-joe lunch after the practice. NO cost. Please sign up on the Opportunity Table by the church office so we know how much food to prepare.

Christmas caroling after the sloppy-joe lunch!

Wear something RED on your HEAD!

Family Christmas Brunch the day of the program! Life & Missions is serving the Breakfast Brunch from 10:00 AM to NOON. There is a free will donation for the brunch.

Please have your children in their classroom the day of the program at 10:00 AM for practice.

AFTER the Family Christmas Brunch! Angel Tree Shopping Spree! All youth and families! We’ve got some money in our youth account that we will use to share and shop for children. Everyone should meet in Trinity Hall after the Children’s Christmas Program and Family Christmas Brunch. That will be about 12:30 PM. Then it’s off to a store to shop for children that need your help. We’ll use the Trinity Bus. Youth…bring a friend or two or three!

Looking ahead to January & February WINTER events! BRRRRRR!

S/Coreen Johnson, Youth & Family Ministry

Dear Trinity Members and Friends,

Peaceful greetings.

At our recent congregational Budget Hearing Meeting in November we had presented to us our proposed budget for the coming year (the final budget will be voted on at our annual congregational meeting on January 20, 2013; mark your calendar). The conversation was both enlightening and interesting as it always seems to be; but especially as we discussed staffing matters (with our Christian Education Director’s pending retirement in June 2013) and, curiously, The Lutheran magazine. (Things that make you go, “Hmmmm.”)

In the overall scheme of things, the $1900 annual cost of The Lutheran isn’t a big deal one way or the other. However, I would like to add my thoughts to the conversation, especially in light of a few comments I have heard, such as, “I don’t read my copy” and “I just throw it away when it comes in the mail” and “It’s a waste of money; take it out of the budget.” So, here are a couple of thoughts to consider.

The Lutheran is like a nation-wide newsletter for our Ev. Lutheran Church in America. It tells of our ELCA activities and events nation-wide and world-wide. If you want to know where the benevolence portion of your weekly offerings go and what those dollars are doing beyond our local interests, then read your copy of The Lutheran.

The Lutheran magazine offers many interesting, educational and inspirational articles for personal and family needs regarding spiritual growth as well as such things as book and movie reviews and commentaries on social and cultural issues. Regularly included in each issue are such things as how other Lutheran congregations are celebrating the season or an upcoming festival, and articles clarifying sometimes confusing doctrinal issues (e.g., Why do we say “I believe in the holy catholic church” in our creeds?). I have also heard such comments as “The Lutheran magazine has really improved over the past few years with its content” and “I find the articles really interesting and helpful” and “I look forward to each monthly issue.” In each issue a lead story or cover story often has accompanying articles and a Study Guide that can be used individually or in a small group.

As a congregation, Trinity subscribes to The Lutheran on what is called an “Every Home Subscription” plan. This plan is actually a 50% savings over an individual subscription cost. This means that The Lutheran can be sent to twice as many homes rather than having each individual household make their own subscription.

And more. If you are one of those who still does not want or read The Lutheran why not do something useful with your copy? Some ideas: Give your copy to a neighbor or a friend (and invite them to worship with you). Or bring your copy to the Opportunity Table at the church for others to pick up and read (we have many guests at church that might welcome a free copy). And I am sure that you can come up with other useful and creative ways to use your read or unread copy to share with others (this, too, is “evangelism” and outreach). Do not simply let your copy go unused and wasted.

If you have not already received and read your December issue of The Lutheran, perhaps I can tickle your interest with some of these intriguing article titles from the Table of Contents:

• ELCA disaster response to continue “until the work is done.” (About how our Lutheran Church is assisting with the aftermath of hurricane Irene)

• Meet John Q. None (The rise of the religiously unaffiliated, or “nones.”)

• Cluttered Lives (We live clutter-filled lives in clutter-filled homes in a clutter-filled world. The spiritual practice of shedding stuff; with accompanying articles and a study guide.) This article alone is worth the price of a full year’s subscription!

• Keeping Jesus Safe (How our Lutheran Church is helping to address the problem of homelessness.)

• Into the Valley of Char (Walt Wangerin in an ELCA pastor and writer of books and articles. He contributes as regular monthly column titled “Between Us” reflecting on a number of topics such as this reflection on his work as a writer and his hike into a mountain forest charred by a fire.)

This … and much more!!

Joy & Peace,

s/ Pr. Curtis Zieske

P.S. The Holy Land Pilgrimage that I am organizing is set for November 1-13, 2013. An information night is scheduled for January 13 at 5:00 PM at church (previously canceled due to an illness). Watch the weekly worship announcements for more details. If you would like to be included on my email “Interest List” please call me (373-2466) or email me at tlpastor@,. Thanks.

May you all have a wonderful

and blessed Christmas!

Is your life cluttered?

What is clutter? “Clutter is an addiction – just like alcohol, food or smoking. It can take over your life.” Clutter includes possessions we don’t use, want or need. Clutter also includes the non-essential ways we spend our hours and energy on extraneous activities and “busy-ness.” Clutter can also take the form of maintaining unhealthy relationships and nursing wounds of hurts from years past.

Reasons for clutter: We’re surrounded by media messages that tell us there’s something wrong with our lives. Brooke Palmer states, “It makes people feel as if they need ‘stuff’ as an insulator against pain.” “But the truth is, stuff doesn’t make you any safer. It’s just false armor.” Kate Blanchard says, “When you feel afraid, it’s just so much easier to be comforted by the things you can see than by the God you can’t see.” Pamela Czarnota tells us, “It’s not that distractions and diversions or clutter trashes our lives, but what it does do is that it blurs our understanding of the clear purpose that God has in mind for the world.”

How does it help us to declutter? Many people view their decisions to part with possessions as a way to dispose of distractions that get in the way of peace and spiritual development. They do see that reducing their clutter will help them build up more gratitude for the things they keep. Trusting in God’s provision and not in our acquisitions continues to be a source of

Men and women welcome to this free concert. This is their first one of the season.

CHEER GIFTS of poinsettias were delivered to shut-ins and those 80 and older starting Thurs., Nov. 29. Thank you to John and Mary Ann Petersen and Marlin and Sharon Herfendal for chairing this very worthwhile TLCW project.

“Is Your Life Cluttered?” cont.

spiritual struggle for many today. Lisa E. Dahill says, “There is a sort of a human need and a disordered desire to hoard. I think there is a fear of the uncertainty of the future. It’s the fear of emptiness and aloneness. We do things to try to fill in for that fear. That’s one of the reasons we overload our schedules and hoard things.”

When we look at the story of Jesus’ visit with sisters Mary and Martha (Luke 10: 38-42) we see that rather than distracting ourselves with busy pursuits and even worthy ones, such as the

household tasks that Martha tackled, we can look to Christ for clues on what’s needed and what’s clutter. Jesus commended Mary for freeing up space during his visit to simply be present with him – essentially to experience a clutter-free life with God. Martha wasn’t doing anything bad, but what she needed was to be an ongoing listener to the love that is at the heart of our lives, the love that makes all things new.

“The needed thing is letting ourselves be open for Christ to

fill us – and not for us to fill that space with clutter.”

Share Your Coffee

The Christmas Season is upon us, REJOICE!!!

Jesus told us to love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, and strength; and, love your neighbor as yourself.  Take the time this Christmas season to share your love by giving.  All of us have something to give, whether it is simply a warm smile or a helping hand; we need to give freely and unconditionally.

Remember all we have is God’s; we are just looking after it for him.

God's Coffee

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said:

"If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.

Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink.

What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups... And then you began eyeing each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of Life we live.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us."

God brews the coffee, not the cups.......... Enjoy your coffee!

"The happiest people don't have the best of everything.

They just make the best of everything."

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply.

Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.

Take time to praise, worship and rejoice this Christmas season.  Church is the great stress reliever!!!  Stay for coffee and donuts, participate in a bible study or sit in on a Sunday school class.

Keep smiling and I will see you in church.

Don’t forget to bring a friend!!!!!!!!!!!!

to help others

We discussed our upcoming Brunch which is going to be held Dec 16th. We have decided to donate the money collected to the Angel Tree. This way our Trinity Kids can help put a SMILE on a child's face that is less fortunate than them. We look forward to seeing you there.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing has been set for December 4th at Hy-Vee from 10-8. As always, Thank You for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Loaves and Fishes is set for the third Monday in  December which is December 17. If this is something you have never done, I would give it a try. It is an experience that will touch your heart.

We are planning a Christmas Card making day for our shut-ins.  The date set is Dec 9th. We will be making cards after worship during the coffee hour. Please come join us in making cards for our Trinity Family Members who are not able to come worship with us. Just remember, if we can put a SMILE on one person’s face we have made it all worth while.

Our next meeting is December 4th at 6:15pm

Be still and know

that I am god

Where does the time go? I think I have so much of it and all of a sudden I’ve missed something, like getting to this letter. There is so much going on in our lives that we really need to ‘Be still and know that I am God’. We have that verse on one of our walls at home and I do need to look at it more often and take it to heart. I get e-mails all the time as we all do, don’t always have time to read them, but one kind of keeps reoccurring for me and it is the one about how busy Satan keeps us with outside activities, most of them being very worthy causes. When we get that busy, sometimes we forget to take the time to say “Thank you” to the Lord or just to have that little visit with Him. At this time of the year, when “Jesus is the reason for the Season” let’s all try to find that quiet moment or just take that moment and have a little visit with Him.

One of the things we are looking forward to is the Children’s Sermons during Advent. The theme this year is ‘Miracle in the Manger’. Again thanks to Coreen Johnson, who finds these gems for the Church. We have four wonderful people to do these, Lance Skov, Verlaine Williams, Corky Stanley and Sonya Zieske. Each week the children will receive magnet ornaments to go on the magnet wreath they receive on the 2nd of Dec. at the first sermon. I look with anticipation to these myself. They call them Children’s Sermons, but I think we all get a lot out of them.

I want to take this opportunity to ‘Thank’ the family of Helen Nelson for the donation to the Banner fund. We will be using it wisely. Already several people have talked to me about joining and helping with this project. So after the Holidays we will be starting on that.

Our next meeting is on Tues. Dec. 4th at 5:30. Please join us as we prepare for worship.

Lighten up

By Marcy C. Undberg

December The Little Lutheran

enews

Parenting makes us grow up

fast. The demands and respon-

sibilities of raising young

children quickly teach us about hard work and sacrifice. Considering all the things we’re expected to teach our kids — from saying please and thank you to becoming global citizens, the job seems to be 24/7, at least. Parenting is an awesome, even holy, task that we must take seriously. But sometimes we can take it too seriously.

Have you looked in the mirror lately? I know it’s a personal question and you’ve probably been too busy. But when you do look in the mirror, are your shoulders slumped over from the weight of parental responsibility? Relax. You’re doing a great job. Believe it and try these three things to lighten up.

1. Get some perspective

Here’s a quote from Bishop Oscar Romero, who was a Roman Catholic bishop in El Salvador: “We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work. Nothing we do is complete. We plant seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. Grace provides yeast that produces effects far beyond our capabilities. Our efforts may be incomplete but they are a beginning, a step along the way. We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs.”

2. Laugh

Yesterday I was pulled up at a stoplight. A girl walked across the street with hair dyed about three shades of blue. I secretly hoped my daughters wouldn’t make the same choice. But the guy in the Jeep next to me said, “I like your hair … is it natural?” She laughed. I laughed. He laughed. Others laughed. I didn’t realize how much I needed this gift from someone who is less judgmental and can take life in stride.

3. Remember that you’re not alone

Our tasks as parents feel daunting, but we get abundant help teaching our kids about life, sometimes when we least expect it. A former co-worker told this story: When her children were little, and they were all serving as missionaries in West Africa, a local woman visited their home. She removed the pan of raw rice she was carrying on her head and placed it on the floor. The young children had a great time playing, stirring around the rice with their hands. When it came time for the woman to go home, she picked up every tiny grain of rice that had spilled from the pan. The children watched her and learned a life lesson about need and care.

So this week, let’s begin to lighten up, take a step back, laugh and notice the community around us that helps us raise our children. Let’s lighten up, knowing that God’s light within is what keeps us going — not merely our own fortitude or ability to see things anew.
