Not Houston or Parkes, but from here in the ACT.As we fast approach the 50th anniversary of this momentous occasion, it seems most appropriate for ‘Space’ to be the theme of the 37th Canberra and Region Heritage Festival. At the launch of this year’s festival three former employees from Honeysuckle Creek spoke briefly about their role there and promoted four days of celebrations from 18 – 21 July 2019.However, during April and early May there are 18 events focused on the galaxy including tours, talks, movies, exhibitions, craft for children, a night sky photographic workshop and even interpretive dance.Space is more than just outer space as we explore architecture, forests, lakes, the bush and spaces in time—such as the 1960s or our pastoral heritage. As eclectic as the 200+ events appear, they are all linked by our endeavor to celebrate our Aboriginal, built and natural heritage.I’ll be taking the grandchildren to the National Trusts’ ‘Grandparents Day at the Old Tuggeranong Schoolhouse.’ We have such an important role in introducing children to history by providing a context and personalising ‘old stuff’. Another idea is the torchlight tours at St John’s churchyard—the children and you will love it!Enjoy an old recipe of Batlow Sticky Apple pancakes at Capital Pancakes in the heritage-listed Sydney Building or enjoy a free bus tour of key heritage engineering sites on 27 April. Stroll around the heritage precincts of Reid or Barton or peek inside modernist building such as Manning Clark House, Urambi Village or Benjamin House. For more information go to the Heritage Festival Website.
