SUMMER HOUSING FOR TEACHERS TAKING SUMMER …

HOUSING OPTIONS and tips to ease your way, for TEACHERS

who take SUMMER PHYSICS & CHEMISTRY COURSES

at ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY.

(compiled by Jane.Jackson@asu.edu. Partially updated in April 2018.)

Long-distance teachers who take ASU courses in summer can (1) live in a single dorm room on campus, or (2) bring their family and rent a condo or apartment off campus. Here are suggestions; also tips to ease your way while at ASU.

OPTIONS IN SUMMER:

(1) ON-CAMPUS DORM HOUSING FOR INDIVIDUALS:

In summers, I arrange housing for teachers in our summer Modeling Instruction/MNS program, at a group rate. E-mail me, if you would like me to arrange housing for you: in the section called “Important info about the program for teachers …”

Prepare meals in the dorm kitchen down the hall, and/or eat at several low-cost cafes nearby. The only open cafeteria is in the Memorial Union, in the center of campus. No meal plans in summers. Memorial Union FAST FOOD locations & hours:

In summer 2018, teachers will stay at Adelphi Commons II; this is a very nice newer dorm! It is on the southeast end of campus, almost 1 mile from our building – located next to a stop on the free ORBIT Mars minibus (at the corner of Rural Road & Spence). Teachers can take the air-conditioned bus each day, to- and from our building, the Bateman Physical Sciences Center (525 East University Drive, halfway between Rural Rd & College Ave). Adelphi II Commons address: 1342 S. Sunset Drive, Tempe 85281. The group rate is about $670 for 3 weeks for a private room and shared bath. Pay in advance; I will e-mail instructions in early May. Please reply to Jane Jackson if interested.

In summer 2018, teachers can reserve an optional linens pack for $25. They include 1 each: blanket, fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillow, pillow case, wash cloth, hand towel, and bath towel. (No mattress pad. ) Beds are single/twin size, regular length. (Shower curtain not needed. A study lamp is useful.)

Our teachers stayed at Adelphi Commons II in summer 2017, and liked it.

[Sadly, as of 2017 Cholla Apartments, on the east end of campus, our favorite on-campus housing, is no longer an option. It was torn down by April 2017, after being renovated in summer 2014, with furnished 2-bedroom, 1-bedroom, and studio apartments for students and summer conference attendees.]

See the sections below, called TIPS TO EASE YOUR WAY and LOGISTICS of the ASU CAMPUS in TEMPE.

(2) Affordable HOUSING near ASU: (partially updated in 2017)

In summer 2015, one of our physics teachers used this website to find a place to stay from June 7 to 26 in Tempe. She has a dog, so she used the filter "pets". Do a search on “charming urban habitat near ASU”. Reserve early! The cost was reasonable. The location is only a mile from the Tempe campus.

In summer 2015, a teacher stayed for $30.50/day + 15% tax, for 3 weeks, at

Studio 6 Tempe, 4909 S Wendler Drive, Tempe, AZ 85282

[I-10 At Baseline Rd, Exit #155. About 4 miles southwest of ASU.]

Phone: (602) 414-4470. FAX: (602) 414-4466. Pets are allowed: flat fee of $50.

In 2017, the cost was $35.64/night + tax for 20 nights in June. Kitchen. Popular! RESERVE EARLY!

In 2017, a teacher found a fully-equipped condo in a gated community near ASU (and very near the free ORBIT bus line) for $46/night via

(3) BEAUTIFUL, REASONABLE COST FAMILY HOUSING IN SCOTTSDALE:

If you have a car or are willing to take a bus, strongly consider living in Scottsdale in a privately-owned condo or apartment near downtown or farther north. You can get a beautiful “winter visitor” apartment in a lovely locale. Typical rates in 2018: $1250 for 2-bedroom, $850 for 1-bedroom. (Until the economy boomed, 2-bedrooms cost ~$1000/month, because otherwise they were vacant all summer.) Minimum 1 month. They come with everything, including dishes, pots & pans, etc.

Downtown Scottsdale is upscale, safe, and lively all year; it has art galleries, movie theatres, cafes and restaurants, a cultural center, art museum, concert hall, stage theatres, and many fine shops. A free trolley. A lovely greenbelt city park runs for 20 miles or more north and south next to Hayden Road, with golf courses, bike paths, fishing ponds, and many other recreational facilities. Bus #72 on Scottsdale Road, and bus #81 on Hayden Road, go to ASU every half hour on weekdays, and every hour on weekends.

Lou Ann Wipperfurth

[Small website. Click on ABOUT US. She says to call her!]

LOU ANN IS EXCELLENT TO WORK WITH! She is glad to help teachers.

She has 15 to 30 properties to rent in summer. Most are near downtown Scottsdale; great locations in upscale areas – particularly at Winfield Place Condos (see next entry; beautiful surroundings). One month minimum. WE'VE RENTED SEVERAL; VERY ATTRACTIVE. Don’t delay, though!

LouAnn wrote: “I own and manage 1- and 2-bedroom condos and patio homes; most are at Winfield Place. All units are non-smoking, no pets are allowed, all units have cable TV, VCR, stereo, answering machine, phone service, microwave, all linens, fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, pool, spa, some have tennis, very well decorated and very clean.” In April 2018, she wrote, “In summer 2018, rental rate on my two-bedroom is $1250 plus electric. One-bedroom rate is $850 per month plus electric. Estimated electric is $125 per month in June and July. If teachers want cable and internet, that is an additional cost.” Cleaning fee is $175.

WINFIELD PLACE CONDOS (6 miles north of ASU, 2 1/2 blocks to bus #72, which stops in front of the ASU Physical Sciences Building)

7430 E. Chaparral Road, 85250

480-946-7965. Office hours: M-F 9-4 pm

LouAnn Wipperfurth is leasing/property manager and home owners assn. manager.

A lovely community, in quiet neighborhood, tall trees & grass, near Scottsdale Road - 1 mile to downtown. LouAnn manages their 248 condos that are privately owned. All are furnished and completely equipped. For some, utilities are extra. Phone & cable are already connected. One month minimum.

Winfield Place is next to a canal; a good place to jog. Wooded appearance: tall pine trees & grass; a winding shallow stream – great for kids’ play! 1 mile to supermarket, excellent low-cost restaurant (Randy's), city park, huge air conditioned shopping center, best movie theatre, more. All "winter visitor" condos are non-smoking units, no pets. Cable TV, VCR, stereo, answering machine, phone service, microwave, all linens, fully equipped kitchen, pools, spas. 2-story buildings. Well decorated and very clean. Covered parking. 4 laundry rooms on premise; large community building for get-togethers.

Helpful hints for rentals:

Tax for rentals of less than a month is about 11%. If you stay for 1 month or longer, the tax is about 1.65%. So it’s to your advantage to stay 1 month or 5 weeks, rather than 4 weeks. (When you sign your rental agreement, be sure to specify at least a month or 5 weeks; otherwise you might pay 11% tax and not get it refunded.)

If you pay electricity, request a 1st floor apartment; your bill will be less (in a multistory building). Ask about ceiling fans. Ask about covered parking, for car batteries die fast in the heat. North-facing or east-facing apartments may be cooler. Trees help. (To help you estimate: my electric bill in July is typically $170 for my 1600 sq. ft. house. I keep the thermostat at 80 degrees.)

(optional) If internet connections are by phone line, order internet installation at least 2 weeks beforehand. Call Cox Communications or CenturyLink. Billing is addressed to your apartment, 1 week after connection. No obligations; cancel at any time.

For most apartments in Tempe, you must bring your own linens, towels, pots & pans, dishes, phone, TV, etc. A partial alternative is to buy items at a thrift store like Gracie’s Cottage, which is within walking distance of ASU. We have bedding, pillows, shower curtains, towels, dishes, silverware, & kitchen items stored in the Physics Dept. that we can lend.

TIPS TO EASE YOUR WAY

WHAT TO BRING: a pillow, sheets. Study lamp (or two, to lend one to a teacher who flies). Lightweight, light-colored T-shirts, sandals, shorts. Alarm clock, clothes hangers, broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses, umbrella (monsoon in July! also can use as parasol to protect against sun), soap & bathroom items, sunscreen, water bottle. BRING YOUR SWIMSUIT, BEACH TOWEL, THONGS, and a PADLOCK for a locker at the ASU Sun Devil Fitness Center. Bring your cellphone.

THRIFT SHOPS: If you forget something or need a blanket to use as a mattress pad, a thrift shop, 'Gracie's Cottage', is at 1520 E. Apache. Salvation Army Thrift Store is at University Drive and Alma School Road in Mesa (Saturdays: 50% off). Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift stores are a few miles north, on Scottsdale Road (Rural Road).

GROCERY STORES: Food City supermarket is at 1338 E. Apache. A small grocery store is at the corner of Lemon and Terrace Streets. A supermarket is on the NE corner of Broadway and Rural Road (Scottsdale Road); that's about 1 mile south of campus.

RENTING housewares: CASTLE rentals.

(I know nothing about them. Looks like they have a student package of housewares for $155.)

If you want to cook lightly (say, just breakfast), and you fly here, see Jane Jackson in the ASU physics department; she has silverware, dishes, pots & pans, shower curtains, and kitchen stuff near her office in PS-H561, donated by teachers who were here before. (Sheets & blankets, mattress pads, too.) Or try Gracie's Cottage, or buy plastic dishes at Food City. (Prior to 2013, we dealt with Sunshine Rentals for bed linens, but they no longer exist.)

HELPFUL HINTS:

* Tempe Bicycle, a reliable long-time business at the corner of University Drive & Rural Road, sells good used bicycles (from $50 on up?). They have many in the summer! Gracie’s Cottage sells used bicycles as-is.

* WARNING: car batteries die from the heat. They don't last more than 2 years, even though they're supposed to last 5 years. So bring your jumper cables. Another warning: cars get stolen & driven to Mexico, so lock your car always,

* BUY a dashboard protector for $5, & bring old towels to cover your upholstery, to protect it from the sun.

* A huge shopping center, Tempe Marketplace, is 1 mile north of University Drive, on McClintock Drive (Hayden Road). Many restaurants, movie theatre.

CHURCHES:

At the Chamber of Commerce (at 1232 E Broadway Road), you can get a map of Tempe that includes a list of Tempe churches. Catholic Campus Parish is on NW corner of University Drive and College Avenue (a block west of the Bateman Physical Sciences Center). A Methodist church is a block west of that, on University Drive. A Congregational church (with a good day care center) is at 101 E. 6th Street.

LOGISTICS of the ASU CAMPUS in TEMPE:

The Physical Sciences complex, H-wing is "PS H" on the map.

Costs, as of summer 2017:

A) For enrolled students: $60 for the summer (lot 59), $90 and up (parking structures; the closest one is Stadium Structure #5, 1/2 block north of the Physical Sciences Center).

B) For conference attendees (e.g., teachers who take courses for noncredit):

The group rate is $40 for 4 weeks to park in lot 59 (about 4 blocks north of our building, east of the stadium; free FLASH bus goes from that lot to our building, solar panels give shade to many parking spots). Buy at Decal Sales office in Towers Apts. (5th St near College Ave).

If you're carpooling, several teachers can share one hanging decal & include all license plate numbers.

To pay for parking: Go to Parking & Transit Services building (in the TOWERS), 5th St between Forest & College Ave. Decal Sales room. Open 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM M-F. (480) 965-6124. Have ready: license plate info, parking permit application, photo ID, and payment (cash, check, Mastercard, Visa).

(We suggest that you get your parking decal the week before your course starts. If that's impossible, consider parking on the first day in the Fulton Garage at the NE corner of University Drive and College Avenue; enter from either street.)

C) For occasional parking (say, on your first day):

* The closest visitors' parking structure is the Fulton Garage at the ASU Foundation building, one block west of our building, the Bateman Physical Sciences Center. From Rural Road, turn west (right) onto University Drive. Drive past the pedestrian bridge, and turn right into the Fulton Garage. Or take the first right (at the light) onto College Avenue and turn right into that same garage. $3/hour, maximum $15/day

* Rural Road Structure: Drive south on Rural Road, past University Drive. Turn right (west) at Terrace St, just north of Rural Road Parking Structure.

Walk north on McAllister Avenue to Tyler Street, turn LEFT (west), and walk past 3 buildings to the Bateman Physical Sciences Center (on your right, northwest of the Noble Science Library).

* METERED PARKING is just east of our building, on the south side of University Drive (lot #46), west of McAllister Avenue, opposite the high rise dorms on University Drive that are east of the pedestrian bridge. Pay by credit card. $3. 1 hour max. FREE after 10pm and all day Sunday.

Other transportation options (updated 2017):

ASU students can buy a summer pass online for $75. It is called U.Pass. 480-965-1072.

CAR RENTAL:

If your housing is within walking distance to ASU, you don't need a car during the week.

Teachers like to carpool to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, etc. on weekends. Cars can be rented inexpensively for weekends at Enterprise Car Rental in Tempe & near condos in Scottsdale. You save 11% airport tax, etc. Since tourists aren't here, rental agencies migh have money-saving coupons all summer long.

I inspected a room and visited the facilities in May 2011. It was new and luxurious; well-maintained; helpful staff; quiet because of double-pane windows, even though it's on a main street and within a block of the freeway. The neighborhood consists of small businesses, one of which is a 'girlie' joint across the four-lane street.

Shelly Legas Leydecker, Sales Manager, was very helpful. She is Genl Mgr in 2018.
