Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST) Designed to determine if teacher

candidates have the requisite skills to read

and understand complex informational and

literary texts.

Content Specialty Test (CST) - Measures

the knowledge and skills of a particular

content area needed to effectively teach in

New York State public schools.

Educating All Students Test (EAS) Evaluates a candidate's ability to

effectively utilize a variety of researchbased strategies to address the learning

needs of students with diverse backgrounds

and needs.

Ed Teacher Performance

Assessment (edTPA)

Performance based assessment of teaching developed by

faculty at Stanford University and staff of the Stanford

Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity (SCALE)

as a predictive measure of effective teaching and student

learning. The edTPA is designed to be completed by

teacher candidates during their student teaching field

experience and useful in developing their knowledge,

skills, and dispositions as they complete the assessment

process. Although the edTPA has been in existence for

some time, New York State will be the first to require it

as a condition of certification.

What is the edTPA?

What is the EAS?

According to the EAS framework, this assessment is designed to evaluate a candidate's ability to

effectively utilize a variety of research-based strategies to address the learning needs of students with

diverse backgrounds and needs. The assessment examines the educator's knowledge of his/her legal,

ethical, and professional responsibilities to learners, colleagues, families, and the community. Finally, it

measures the educator's awareness of the importance of parent/guardian involvement in the education

of each child, and skill in implementing strategies to facilitate this involvement.

genres, and produce writing pieces that effectively address a range of tasks, audiences, and purposes.

Content Specialty Test (CST)

What is the CST?

There are actually multiple CSTs that address the various content areas for teacher certification in New

York State. According to the draft CST frameworks, these exams measure the knowledge and skills of a

particular content area needed to effectively teach in New York State public schools. The CSTs measure

content knowledge and content pedagogy knowledge.
