Module 2: Introduction to Teaching English as a Second Language Description: Presents a general overview of the different ESL learning theories, and discusses the various approaches and methods to ESL teaching. Discusses the role of the students and teachers in these methods or approaches and their suitability for the learning context. Module 3: Introduction to Teaching ESL/EFL Skills and Elements Description: Explores the best practices in teaching the language skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) and elements (Vocabulary, Grammar, Spelling, Punctuation, etc.), using communicative, interactive, and authentic teaching materials, techniques and strategies. Module 4: Learning Assessment and Feedback —30 hoursDescription: Describes a variety of assessment types and instruments that can be used to measure and evaluate students’ learning, and how to provide them with feedback that promote their subsequent learning. Discusses the different purposes and benefits of learning assessment and the stakeholders for whom assessment is important. Module 5: Lesson Planning and Classroom Management Description: Explores the features of a successful ESL lesson, effective ESL lesson plan, and a competent ESL teacher. Presents different ways of planning a lesson. Discusses strategies of classroom management and organization of the learning environment. Module 6: Introduction to Computer Assisted Language Learning Description: Introduces Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and the different resources and activities that can be used to assist the teaching and learning of ESL. Discusses criteria for assessing and evaluating the suitability of ESL software and websites. Module 7: Practicum (optional)Description: Equips teachers with practical teaching experience that will expose them to the real world of ESL teaching! Trains teachers on how to put theory (learned in modules 1-6) into practice, and get a flavor of the ESL teaching-learning process. Provides confidence in starting (or continuing) the career of Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL). Module 8: Exit Portfolio Description: Helps teachers reflect analytically and think critically about, their TESOL experience during this course, by summarizing their experience, highlighting the new knowledge and skills they learned, providing feedback to course instructors, encouraging them to build their own TESOL portfolio, by presenting them with samples of teaching philosophies, resumes, job cover letters and interview questions, and so forth.
