Policy Number: 204.04

Policy Title: Station Tours

Adopted: 01/17/2014

Rescinds: New

Approved By: (Chief)

I. PURPOSE:

This policy defines how the Flint Hill Fire Department (FHFD) schedules and conducts fire station tours.

II. DISCUSSION:

The FHFD welcomes visitors to tour department stations as part of the department’s fire prevention program. Fire stations are active workplaces from which firefighters and apparatus may have to respond at a moment’s notice. To help provide a meaningful experience and a safe environment for visitors, as well as the efficient operations of the fire department, this policy provides a protocol to be used for station tours.

III. POLICY:

1) Station tours should ideally be scheduled between the hours of 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

a) Weekend or evening tours can be scheduled if necessary but should never be scheduled later than 8:00 PM.

b) Acceptance of walk up tours is at the discretion of the highest ranking officer present at the time of the request. Unless there is a compelling reason not to provide a walk up tour, requests will be honored.

2) Birthday party groups are welcome to tour a station but may not hold party festivities at the station.

3) Group size must be 25 or fewer total participants (including children and chaperones).

a) There must be 1 adult chaperone for every 5 children.

4) If there is a dispatch during the tour and no other members are able to continue with the tour all tour participants should be escorted out of the station and to a safe location prior to any apparatus responding.

a) The station should be secured prior to departure.

b) Participants should be informed of this possibility before a tour starts.

5) Firefighters giving tours should prepare for each tour.

a) Outlines for different age ranges are available at Station 1 and should be used.

b) Look through the outlines and find the one that best fits the group. In the case of multiple ages, pick a few general themes and adjust them to the audience.

c) Make a final check of the station about 15 minutes before the group is scheduled to arrive. Look for hazards, such as items that might be easily knocked over, slippery areas, etc. and secure the station for the tour.

d) See policy 220.03 PUBLIC FIRE EDUCATION for presentation guidelines.

6) The rules specified in policy 204.03 VISITORS AT FIRE STATIONS are applicable to station tours.
