Civic EngagementCivic Engagement is acting upon a heightened sense of responsibility to one’s community and may include developing civic sensitivity and participation in building civil society that benefits the common good. Civic engagement is the notion of global citizenship and interdependence that empowers students to become agents of positive social change by:Learning from others, self and environment to develop perspectives on social issues.Recognizing and appreciating human diversity and commonality;Behaving and working through controversy with civility;Participating actively in public life, public problem solving, and community service;Assuming leadership and membership roles in organizations;Developing empathy, ethics, values and sense of social responsibility;Promoting social justice locally and globallyService-Learning Service-Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection with the purpose of enriching the learning experience, teaching civic responsibility, and strengthening communities” (Learn and Serve America, 2010). At Allegany College of Maryland, service-learning consists of a variety of course model options that require a set amount of hours per course and focus on learning outcomes such as written assignments, journals, public presentations, discussions, and action and reflection processes. The Role of the SL/CE Volunteer Center 1. Serve as a liaison between the faculty, students, and community partners. 2. Provide support and follow-up to students and faculty. 3. Create and maintain a list of current partner sites and provide placement information. 4. Provide material to faculty and student to initiate the process. 5. Track student hours via time sheets that are available online under “volunteer center.”6. Evaluate performance and success via feedback surveys. The Role of the ACM Instructors 1. Facilitate the service-learning and civic engagement process in their classes. 2. Work with the SL/CE Volunteer Center to access up-to-date partner information.3. Determine credit and specific course requirements and communicate this to students.4. Maintain communication with community partners and the SL/CE Volunteer Center. 5. Receive and evaluate student materials. 6. Submit feedback/evaluations to the SL/CE Volunteer Center.7. Ensure that student forms are completed and reported back to SL / CE Volunteer Center. Service Type Definitions Service-Learning combines community-based service with classroom instruction, focusing on critical, reflective thinking as well as personal and civic responsibility. Service learning programs involve students in activities that address community-identified needs while developing their academic skills and commitment to their community.” (National Center for Service-Learning)Civic Engagement is defined as meaningful participation in the community for the purposes of addressing an issue or concern, solving a community problem, or getting involved in leadership opportunities that are both political and nonpolitical. Often it is focused on the processes of our representative democracy that works to make a difference in the civic life of our communities. In the academic world, civic engagement also relates to the coursework to some degree, so in a composition course, the primary method of engagement would most likely involve writing about/for the designated cause or issue.Volunteerism is a form of serving in which the service recipient is the intended beneficiary. Although an important part of serving the community, volunteerism does not involve the same emphasis on reflection and learning as in service learning, or community participation as in civic engagement. Specifically, a student might choose to volunteer their time at an animal shelter. This act benefits the shelter, but if this experience is not taken back into the classroom, the reflection process does not occur. Internships are generally a term of service in which the stated goal is to gain specific hands-on experience within a particular subject, capstone assignment or field of study. The main difference between Internships and volunteering is that the primary focus is on the student who is working on a set of learning goals, and not the recipient organization. In this situation, a student might choose to work at a local business in their specific field. This is based purely on the motivation to gain more experience within the field, and does not include the action/reflection process that would make it service-learning, or the community involvement that occurs in the civic engagement experience. The Benefits of InvolvementFor the Faculty: Service-Learning and Civic Engagement revitalizes courses and student participationProvides variety of learning styles and approaches to support student learning outcomesCreates new opportunities for involvement in real world experiences and networkingImproved satisfaction with class outcomes have been reported For the Students: Creates a connection with community and potential employersHas a positive effect on student development, including a sense of personal efficacy, personal identity, spiritual growth, and moral development Has a positive effect on interpersonal development and the ability to work well with others, leadership and communication skills Has a positive effect on reducing stereotypes and facilitating empathy among diverse cultural, ethnic and racial groupsHas a positive effect on sense of social responsibility and citizenship skills Improves students' ability to apply what they have learned in “the real world” Impacts academic outcomes as demonstrated through a complexity of understanding, problem analysis, critical thinking, and cognitive development Contributes to career development and exploration Helps promote enriched faculty relationships among students Improves student satisfaction with college Statistics show that engaged students are more likely to graduate Builds learning relationship between service and academic content and vice versa Shapes civil society, builds leadership and public participation in democratic processes For the College: Enhances community relationships Increases student development, preparation and patterns of successEnhances the college atmosphere and builds understanding among diverse cultures For the Community: Establishes a deeper relationship with the campus community of supportsProvides a source of engaged service volunteers Creates a partnership with the college that supports their long term goals (Eyler, Giles, Stenson, & Gray, 2001) Course Models Course Models: Description: Required Service Service is required of the entire class on individual basis in order to complete the course. Students have a set number of hours they must work, and have specific course materials they must complete. Optional Service Optional Service is available as an alternate course option within a traditional course. This option is offered at the beginning of the semester, and students are required to sign an agreement acknowledging the course change. Students again have a set number of hours and materials that they are required to complete. Group Service Students perform a service as a class/group and complete the reflection process as a group within the classroom. There may be either a set hour or set day requirement. Single Day Service Students perform service based on day requirement instead of a set number of hours. This could be a day spent serving an organization or a day serving at a specific event. Hours may vary. Immersion Experiences / Trips Immersion experiences / trips are multiple might involved a prolonged placement or travel to where deeper knowledge of the subject can be learned.
