Metric Estimation Game

Metric Estimation Game

(Similar to the TV Game show "The Price Is Right")

Materials:

one graduated cylinder

one meter stick

one balance

lots of items to measure (examples: marble, eraser, can of coke)

Procedure:

1. Divide the class into 4 - 6 teams depending on the size of your class.

2. Have them assign themselves a number (1 - 6 ) #s are depending on your class size. One member from each team comes to the front of the room with their computer.

3. Teacher randomly calls a number to come to the front of the room.

4. Teacher selects an item to estimate (example height of a desk, volume of the liquid in a can, or mass of a calculator)

5. The selected members guess the metric quantity. Team members sitting at their tables may state guesses to help the contestant/team member.

6. Each member in the front of the room writes their estimation on the dry eraser board provided.

7. Answers are shown to the class, and then the item is measured. Have one student come to the front to measure the item.

8. The team with the closest estimate gets a point. Any team that gets an EXACT estimate earns 5 points.

9. Repeat with another member of the team who comes in the front of the room.

10. Winning team has the most points at the end.

**It is helpful to have the measurements ahead of time done if you want to skip the part of the students measuring before the answer is revealed.**
