-685800-68580000 DATE \@ "d MMMM yyyy" 2 March 2021For immediate release Preventing burnout amongst frontline healthcare workersAs health professionals gear up to deliver Australia’s ambitious COVID-19 vaccination rollout, a new digital platform will help protect the mental health of those working hard to keep us safe. Black Dog Institute have relaunched TEN (The Essential Network) – a one-stop e-health hub developed by health professionals for health professionals – with a new website, renewed focus on preventing burnout, addressing healthcare workers key concerns around confidentiality and mandatory reporting.Following extensive user consultation, the new TEN features practical resources, online tools and personalised support for healthcare workers and their teams as they manage the pressures of increased workloads during the vaccination drive. Through the new digital platform, TEN provides access to confidential mental health support matched to symptom severity, while also delivering up to five free clinical telehealth sessions for those needing additional help for their mental wellbeing.“Every Australian has been impacted by COVID-19, but few have felt the brunt of the pandemic more keenly than health professionals,” said Black Dog Institute’s Deputy Director and Chief Psychiatrist, Professor Sam Harvey.“Healthcare workers remain under significant strain as they prepare to implement the nation-wide COVID-19 vaccination rollout, while dealing with telehealth and coping with ongoing changes to clinical and practice procedures during the pandemic.”“After a year of immense uncertainty and change, there has been little time for these frontline staff to rest or recuperate. We’ve worked closely with GPs, nurses, psychologists and other healthcare professionals to ensure TEN continues to meet their needs in response to these evolving challenges.” Sydney-based GP, Dr Phoebe Holdenson Kimura, said adjusting to new ways of working during the pandemic, coupled with unique stressors on health professionals such as working on Covid wards or facing quarantining away from family, put their mental health at particular risk.“Health professionals are often reluctant to seek support, as they worry it could be detrimental to their careers, but they are at high risk for burnout.“Platforms like TEN are important as they reassure healthcare workers that confidential help is available, giving time-poor doctors a one-stop shop for all the types of support out there.“GPs and health practitioners are the carers of the community, and if we don’t look after our own health, then who can look after everyone else?”Black Dog Institute first launched TEN in 2020, in collaboration with: This Way Up, RANZCP, Hand-n-Hand Peer Support, SAS, APS, Cogniss, UNSW Sydney and the University of Melbourne.
