MOST SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Basic Research

Patent Declaration Under 37 CFR 1.132. Synergistic activity of Fipronil and (S)-Methoprene. U.S. Patent 45313-2339. Insecticidal combination to control mammal fleas, in particular fleas on cats and dogs. Issued 1 Aug 2000. Identified and demonstrated the in vitro and in vivo flea ovicidal synergy of Fipronil + (S)-Methoprene combinations and products.

As Discovery Biologist at Rhone Poulenc Ag , I identified a new chemical class of anthelmintic, a systemic flea and tick adulticide for pets, and a new arylpyrazole compound highly active against ectoparasites of food producing animals, 1996.

Successfully incorporated in vitro parasiticide targets into the high throughput screening program

at Rhone Poulenc Ag, 1996.

Established in vivo parasiticide screening programs at various research facilities throughout the U.S.A. and in Brazil, 1995-1996.

Identified and described the biological and morphological modes of action of the IGR,

Fenoxycarb (Tenocide(), against the life cycle stages of the cat flea, 1990.

Systemic flea ovicidal efficacy of Fenoxycarb demonstrated via oral and percutaneous routes

of administration, Fermenta Animal Health, 1990.

Discovered the selective toxicity of diazinon against pyrethroid-resistant horn flies. This

discovery lead to the commercial development of the first insecticidal cattle ear tag

(Terminator(, Fermenta Animal Health Co.) and subsequent diazinon ear tags (Patriot(,

Fermenta Animal Health Co.) effective against pyrethroid-resistant horn flies, 1985.

Developed a method of preparing permanent light microscopy slides of coccidian oocysts. No significant changes in the characteristic morphology of the oocysts for over a period of 10 years, 1978-1988.

Product Development

Supplemental NADA 200-342 Pyrantel Pamoate Equine Paste for removal and control of mature infections of Anoplocephala perfoliata, removal and control of large strongyles, small strongyles, pinworms (Oxyuris equi) and large roundworms (Parascaris equorum) in horses and ponies. FDA/CVM approved 20 April 2005.

Canine pour-on (5 ml) containing fenoxycarb or pyriproxyfen for control of emerging adult fleas

from shed flea eggs for up to five months. Pyriproxyfen product possesses inherent adulticidal flea activity of >80% for five months. The extended adulticidal label claim of the pyriproxyfen pour-on illustrated the direct application of an in vitro research finding (Meola et al., 1993 Proc. First Intern.

Conf. on Insect Pests in the Urban Environ., Cambridge, pp.221-228) to an end-use product, 1995.

Canine spot-on (1 ml) containing fenoxycarb or pyriproxyfen for 28-35 days control of adult fleas
