STL Graduates Brown Bag Lunch Notes - June 12 Advising in Summer 2020 – Teresa Steinkamp Scholarship Foundation of St. LouisSFSTL put together a document to guide advising during these unprecedented and unknown times – assembled by all the student advisors (attached)Students are grappling with so many considerations they have never dealt with before – colleges too Colleges are announcing plans – these plans may still change between now and the fall semester Colleges have contingency plansIt is too early to be 100% sure you will be on campus and in classrooms2 campuses in MO in financial exigency – students need to determine if they want to go to that school – Lincoln University and Missouri Western University Big decision to enroll in college any year – especially complicated this yearAdvising guide for students you have relationships with What questions do students need to ask to make this decision?Think about their educational journeyWhat is important to their learning? It is the student’s education, they have unique needsGuide is broken out by topics – see the handout – academics, finances, basic needs, health and safety, parallel plans, defermentOur responsibility is to make sure students have all the information available to them so that they can make an informed decision These are exceptional circumstances – past trends or common wisdom do not necessarily apply, especially when it comes to deferment Teresa is open to suggestions for the document – you are encouraged to adjust it to your studentsGuide is meant to facilitate a conversation with a student so the student can make the decisionStart with a big picture reflection – what does a student need to be successful Swift Student – free tool – Matt Newlin has a webinar available for more information Summer Advising ResourcesBeth Bender – SLPS Only SLPS students – seniors and recent grads Summer Center – 3rd year Virtual June 1 – August 6 - email in requests or there is a phone line – 10 am – 3 pm, Monday - ThursdayTranscript, FAFSA, award letters, trades, employment, applications – anything to support students on their next step after high schoolCounselors gave a list of students that they were concerned about2nd week – 175 calls and emails so farLots of students switching plans, mobile enrollment with STLCC, transcript requestsEnd of the year survey – updated phone numbers – helped with outreach - Still have challenges with phone numbersEach month there is someone from each school – more personal touch with the studentsDoing the FAFSA over the phone is a real challenge – also hard when the student has to file the FAFSA on the phoneSLPS has good FAFSA data - can reach out to students who have not completeCTE teachers also available to support students finishing certifications or looking for jobs Missouri College Advising Corps – College Connections Center – have support for anyone – adults, recent grads – any districtDrop in advising hours – advisors waiting on zoom Tuesday 11-1:30, Wednesday 2:30-5, Thursday 11-1:30, Saturday 10:30-12:30 - Can also make appointmentsVery open to what they assist students with – FAFSA, applications, etc. Advisors have call lists through college advising corpsWednesday webinars – for students Resources on website for students and familiesSocial media also has resourcesMissouri Student Aid Updates – Leroy Wade (see his handout for detailed information)FY2020Spending restrictions in place for the governor – have not impacted financial aid programs as of right nowNo real disruption to programs this yearSome accommodations to scholarship programs due to disruptions - Waiving GPA requirements – just requiring SAP, A+ accommodations – adjusted tutoring requirement FY21 – not great news No final action on any of the appropriations billsMay be some additional vetoes or changes This is what we know now – but could change – final decision made by end of the monthBright Flight allocation is down – award amount will probably decline to below $3,000Access MO also down – usually receive a transfer from gaming commission – casinos were shut down -unclear if that will happenDeciding what to do with Access Missouri deadline – April 1 FAFSA deadline most likely – will probably be an award reduction No exact numbers yet – depends on the governorA+ funding always been fully funded – expect shortfall - May reduce the number of credit hours they pay for. Possible will get supplemental funding request. Fast track – under spent $10m allocation last year. This year $3m allocation. Likely shortfall. Marguerite Ross Barnett – funding and program eliminated for this grant for PT studentsCommissioner Mulligan introducing state level activities – cross departmental Citizen Microcell – work together across the state - Webinar Thursday June 18 3:30 pm – Leroy will share information (attached)Scholarships Missouri Scholarship and Loan Foundation Missouri students attending Missouri institutions – focus on students with limited financial resources Access EXTRA – on Scholarship Central – awarded as they come in – very quick turnaround!27+ on ACT, $12,000 or less EFC, Missouri resident, Full time at an eligible Missouri institution – no proprietary schools – Deadline June 30MOFELP – fee free, interest free loan - fill the gap after federal loans – up to $5,000, can apply for as a college freshman – done through the schools financial aid office – alternative to a plus or private loan – 21+ ACT for freshman, once they have been in college at least one semester they just need a 2.5 GPA at the college – increased funding to meet demandDirector’s Choice Emergency Grant - director of financial aid nominates students Huge increase in requests due to pandemic Scholarship CentralStill opportunities available. It usually only takes an hour or less from FSA ID to submit, and I have not had any persistent trouble with the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. I can usually find the trouble.
