Applicants must meet the minimum criteria. All instructions must be followed exactly in order to avoid disqualification. Please read carefully and make use of the checklist provided at the end of this document.All undergraduate of departmental scholarships must have an overall minimum grade point average of 3.0. All graduate recipients should have an overall minimum grade point average of 3.5, unless otherwise specified in the award description.All recipients, undergraduate and graduate, of departmental scholarships must be admitted to Texas Woman’s University on a non-provisional basis. All recipients, undergraduate and graduate, of departmental scholarships must meet the criteria specified by the department in accordance with the wishes of scholarship donors.Late applications will not be considered.No person per academic year will receive more than one departmental scholarship that is listed in this Announcement. This restriction does not include awards given by departmental organizations, such as Omega Rho Alpha and Sigma Tau Delta.All writing submissions (essays, research papers, and creative works) must be typed, double spaced, and accompanied by an abstract (except for creative works) not to exceed 150 words, and as part of your application packet. The abstract should summarize the paper, not introduce it; do not include your name on the abstract page. Research or professional papers should follow MLA style for documentation of sources but not for placement of name or other personal identification so that the submission will be blind. The title of the submission should also appear in its normal place at the beginning of the text. All formal papers must have been written for a course or professional conference; give course number, date, and instructor’s name OR conference information on the title page. The awards committee will base all scholarship and award decisions on the pool of applications received and reserves the right to withhold awards.Papers for which ESFL awards have been given in previous years may not be submitted again.Application packages must include application forms and all required materials, and must be submitted electronically via the Pioneer Scholarship System. Please name your files as follows: Lastname_writingsample.xxx. Lastname.application.xxx. If you are submitting more than one writing sample, as may be required for awards addressing certain areas of study, please add the scholarship name to the file name, as follows: Lastname_writingsample_scholarshipname.xxx. Please ensure that you attach all required documents to your application before the closing date. Undergraduate AwardsDr. Helen Benjamin Endowed Scholarship. While the application process will be open to BA, MA, and PhD students, preference will go to an African American doctoral student with financial need and a minimum GPA of 3.0.?Helen Bass Dailey Endowed Scholarship. Given to an undergraduate English major on the basis of test scores, GPA, and financial need. Edith and Edgar Deen Scholarship. An anticipated two or three awards to full-time English majors with a GPA of 3.0 or better. A manuscript of appropriate length must be submitted in one of the following categories:Short storyNovel: Outline and one chapter for a novella or full-length novelPoetry. Three short lyrics (100 lines or fewer altogether) or one longer poem of at least 100 linesExpository prose (may include essays, reviews, and reports)Drama: One-act play or one act of a full-length play accompanied by an outline of the full playDetailed script for documentary or drama for radio or televisionEnglish and Speech Endowed Scholarship. Given to an undergraduate student enrolled in English or speech classes for excellence in scholarship, financial need, and/or contributions to the entire academic community. Lavon B. Fulwiler Endowed Scholarship. Awarded annually. The recipient may be either (1) a graduate student majoring in English with preference given to the student who is specializing in Middle English literature or English Romantic literature or (2) a junior or a senior English major who has manifested superior ability and achievement in the field of English. The recipient of this award should have completed at least one full semester or one full summer session (two consecutive summer terms of study) and a minimum of nine semester hours of credit at TWU the semester before the scholarship is awarded. In addition to maintaining the appropriate minimum G.P.A. (3.0 for undergraduates, 3.5 for graduates) the recipient(s) should have maintained a GPA of 3.5 in all English courses. Submission of a paper in the appropriate field is required.Dr. Leslie R. Kreps Endowed Scholarship. Awarded annually to a graduate student who demonstrates superior ability and strong interest in rhetoric, or to a junior or senior English major who demonstrates superior rhetorical skills. Must submit a paper for consideration.Ada Cade McCurry and Martha Faye McCurry Savage Endowed Scholarship.Awarded annually to the undergraduate English major or English minor seeking certification who submits the best paper (not to exceed twelve pages in length).Joyce Thompson Endowed Memorial Scholarship. Awarded annually to an English major. Clarice Mixon Turner Endowed Scholarship. Preference given to an undergraduate or graduate English major. The recipient(s) of this award should have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a 3.5 in English. The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student at TWU and should have completed at least one semester of full-time study at TWU. Submission of a research or scholarly paper is required.Graduate AwardsDr. Helen Benjamin Endowed Scholarship. Designated for graduate students in the ESFL department who are native Texans (born in Texas) and who are studying American literature, the scholarship may be renewed yearly. Applicants must fill out the additional form and submit writing sample related to the study of American literature. Awards will be decided according to the number and qualifications of those in the applicant pool and may be applied to living expenses as well as tuition, fees, and books. May be renewed, with application, providing the applicant is making satisfactory progress.Dr. John L. Dawson, Sr. Endowed Scholarship. An anticipated two awards to full-time or part-time graduate students who are pursuing the PhD in Rhetoric. The applicant must submit a paper written since the last awarding of this scholarship, or a dissertation prospectus. Edith and Edgar Deen Scholarship. An anticipated two or three awards to full-time English majors with a GPA of 3.0 or better. These are not listed in the Pioneer Scholarship System. Contact the individuals listed below for application information and due dates. Johnnie Lee Feemster Memorial Scholarship. Given annually to a graduate student in English or Rhetoric. Interested students should contact the Scholarship Committee of the Former Students Association, care of Mary Pagano (940/898.2587, or mpagano@twu.edu) for application instructions. Fran Hutcherson Memorial Scholarship, awarded in support of an undergraduate or graduate student seeking a degree in English. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and be ineligible for Pell Grants. May be renewed, with application, providing the applicant is making satisfactory progress. Awarded through the General Scholarship Committee. Former Students Association (FSA) Scholarships. Two scholarship awards of $500 each will be made from donations provided by friends and former students in English. One award will be designated for an undergraduate English major, and one will be for a graduate student in English or Rhetoric. All applicants must be in good academic standing and enrolled at TWU in 2018. Calls for applications will be issued by the Scholarship Committee of the chapter in the spring.
