Procedure for Caregivers

|PROCEDURE |

|Always wash hands and put on gloves. |

|Review the 5 rights: right person, right medication, right time, right dosage, right route. |

|Ask the resident to lie down on his/her left side, with the right leg flexed. Place a pad beneath the resident to protect the bed.|

|Uncap the enema tip. If the tip is not pre-lubricated, then lubricate the tip up to 2 inches with a water-based lubricant. |

|Expose the anus. If the resident has hemorrhoids, carefully move them out of the way before inserting the tip of the enema. |

|Insert tip slowly into the rectum. If you have difficulty, as the resident to breathe deeply and relax. |

|Slowly administer the contents by rolling the tube as fluid is instilled. If the resident complains of fullness or pain, wait 30 |

|seconds and begin squeezing the tube again at a slower rate. |

|Ask the client to hold the contents in for at least 5 minutes. |

|Assist the resident to a sitting position and onto a bedpan, commode, or toilet. |

|Document medication administration in MAR. |
