1st Grade Math

1st Grade Math

1st GRADE MAJOR FOCUS AREAS

1. Develop understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for adding/subtracting within 20

o Use objects to model basic addition and subtraction problems.

2. Develop understanding of whole number relationships and place value, focusing on grouping in tens and ones

o Subtract multiples of 10 from numbers within 100. o Compare whole numbers (up to to 100). o Recognize whole numbers between 10 and

100 in terms of tens and ones (especially recognizing the numbers 11 to 19 as composed of a ten and some ones).

3. Developing understanding of linear measurement and measuring lengths

o Understand the process of measurement

4. Reasoning about attributes of, and composing and decomposing geometric shapes

o Use shapes to build other shapes, e.g., put two triangles together to make a quadrilateral.

The 1st grade standards are broken into 4 areas:

Operations and Algebraic Thinking ? Represent and solve problems involving addition/subtraction

Number and Operations in Base Ten ? Extend the counting sequence; Understand place value; Use place value to add and subtract

Measurement and Data ? Measure lengths; Tell and write time; Represent and interpret data

Geometry ? Reason with shapes and their attributes

MATH GAMES AND RESOURCES

Fluency Expectations: From previous work in Kindergarten, students in first grade should already be fluent (have quick recall from memory and multiple strategies to use) in adding and subtracting within 5.

First grade has 1 major fluency goal: *1.OA.C.6 ? Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.

Card Games: These games can be played to improve basic fact recall and mental math strategies to meet the fluency expectations. And they're fun!

*ADDITION/SUBTRACTION: Addition Number Battle/War Mind Reader Addition Memory I Spy Sums Tens Go Fish

*NUMBER SENSE: Treehouse Number Battle/War Elevator
