United States History and Government 11R Course Information for Students and Parents Ms.Sexton Commack High School 2019-2020 Email: asexton@commack.k12.ny.us Welcome to your United States History and Government class for the 2018-2019 school year! This is a required course for all New York State students for graduation. I hope you are ready for a fun and exciting learning experience. Together we will explore the history of the United States from its origins and growth through times of peace, conflict, and prosperity. The goal is to create an awareness of how these events shaped the country in which we live today. I look forward to working with you and hope that we can enjoy a very successful school year! The course concludes with the New York State Regents Exam in United States History and Government. We will be exploring many different concepts and time periods in United States History that will include: Geography Civil War & Reconstruction 1920’s, Great Depression, and New Deal Colonial Times and American Revolution Gilded Age and Progressive Era Cold War Our Constitution Imperialism Civil Rights Movement Early Presidents and Manifest Destiny World War I and World War II Contemporary Presidents and Issues TEXTBOOK: Danzer, Gerald A, et al. The Americans. Evanston, IL: McDougal Littell, 2012. Print. (Leave Textbook at Home) The link to the text can also be found on my personal website. REQUIRED MATERIALS: 1. (1) Three-ring 2” or 3” hard cover binder/Loose-Leaf Paper (For this class only!!) (5) Dividers (Class Notes, Homework, Vocabulary, Test/Quizzes, and Mid-Term/Final Review). Notebook checks every marking period – Quiz Grade).Notebook must be brought to class every day. 2. Pens (Blue or Black Only), #2 Pencils, and 2 Highlighters. 3. (1) Two Pocket Folder for Homework. BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS: Respect yourself, others and school property. Raise your hand before speaking, and listen to your classmates. Be on time to class and ready to work before the bell rings. Come to class prepared with the necessary assignments and materials every day. Participate positively in class discussions and activities, including cooperative and independent assignments. Be a serious student. Be prepared to think about and discuss historical as well as current issues. I dismiss the class, not the bell!! The class will not be dismissed until everyone is seated quietly. Excessive use of cell phones will be dealt with accordingly. Please use common sense. Phones are not to remain on your desk or in your lap at ANY TIMEATTENDENCE POLICY: Students are expected to be present every class to ensure they are gaining a complete understanding of the course material. Students are expected to be in their seats, ready to work before the bell rings. If you must be late, please bring a valid pass or it will be marked illegal. Three illegal late arrivals to class equal one cut… school policy! If you must be absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and make up any work. Failure to do so may result in a zero on any assignment or exam missed. Please refer to the portion of this syllabus, marked ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Copying assignments and looking at someone else’s exam are forms of cheating. Plagiarism is when you submit work that is not your own without citing references. Anyone engaged in cheating or plagiarism will receive a grade of zero for that assignment or exam and face disciplinary action according to the Commack Union Free School District policy. HOMEWORK Homework assignments will be assigned on a regular basis. These assignments will vary from reading, writing, analyzing, etc., and may be used to review material learned that day or to introduce concepts for the following class. Homework assignments will be worth 5 points each. Completing homework assignments neatly and thoroughly and handing them in on time will earn full credit. Please refer to homework rubric. If you are absent the day an assignment is due, you must turn it in on the day you return to class to receive full credit. Students have the opportunity to make up homework assignments or complete alternate assignments for partial credit. Homework assignments may be randomly collected, and homework quizzes may be randomly given. If you do your homework every night you have nothing to worry about! QUIZZES Quizzes will be given regularly. Quizzes may be in the form of multiple choice, vocabulary, short answer, and/or an on demand task (ODT) assignment that will be used to evaluate your understanding of the material we are learning. Homework may also be collected and graded as a quiz, but you will be notified prior to the assignment due date. TESTS Tests will be given twice per marking period and will be modeled after the Regents exam. They will consist of multiple-choice questions, document scaffolding questions, and an essay. Additionally, each test will have five “Blast from the Past” questions that will review topics that we have already covered. Projects will also be given each marking period. PARTICIPATION It’s a fact! The more you participate and become engaged within the classroom, the better your understanding of the material will be. I will make sure that the classroom is an open environment that encourages every student to express their views and ideas, so feel free to speak up and be heard! GRADES Tests/Projects= 60% Quizzes = 20% Homework =15% Participation=5% EXTRA HELP Extra help will be offered after school on Wednesdays or by appointment. Come prepared with questions!!ESCHOOL VIEW Students are responsible for work missed upon a late arrival or absence from class. Notes, handouts, homework assignments, quiz/test dates, etc. can be accessed on my website through the Commack School District home page.
