Venus Fun Facts
VENUS FUN FACTS
Size
• Venus is sometimes called Earth’s twin because it is similar in diameter and mass to Earth.
Position
• Venus is about 67 million miles from the Sun and about 25 million miles from Earth.
Movement
• Venus rotates, or spins on its axis, from east to west. All the other planets rotate from west to east. That means that on Venus the sun rises in the west and the sun sets in the east.
• It takes Venus 225 Earth days to complete a trip around the sun. Because it spins slowly, it takes Venus 243 days for the planet to spin once. Therefore, a day on Venus is longer than it’s year!
• The thick clouds around Venus rotate much faster. It takes four Earth days for the clouds to circle Venus.
Orbit
• All the planets orbit in an ellipse (an oval). However, of all the planets, Venus orbits closest to a perfect circle.
Terrain
• The terrain consists of a series of troughs, ridges, and faults.
Weather
• The temperature on the surface of Venus is about 900 degrees. That is hot enough to melt lead.
• The atmospheric pressure on Venus is about 90 times greater than on Earth. You would have to dive down nearly a half mile in the ocean to experience this pressure.
• Winds are very strong, and sometimes the winds are over 200 mph. On Earth, weather with 74 mph wind is classified as a hurricane.
