ROTARY FUN FACTS-CLUB 24

• The Rotary Club of Salt Lake City was founded in January 1911, a little more than five years after the first Rotary Club was organized by Paul Harris in Chicago in 1905.

• Club 24’s first meeting was held in Room 508 of the Boston Building. When the club received its charter in 1911, it was the 24th club to do so, and the only Intermountain Club between Chicago and the West Coast.

• Today there are 45 rotary clubs throughout Utah.

• Salt Lake City hosted the Rotary International Conference in 2007 when New Orleans was unable to do so following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

• In 2011 Salt Lake Rotary celebrated 100 years of Rotary in Utah with many celebrations and service projects.

• The first service project of the first Rotary club in Chicago was the installation of public toilets in the city, thus transforming Rotary into the world’s first service club.

• The name “Rotary” comes from the original practice of rotating meeting locations.

• The first women joined Rotary in 1987. Today more than 196,000 women are members of Rotary International.

• Club 24 Rotarian Richard L. Evans served as President of Rotary International in 1966-67.

• There are more than 1.2 Million Rotarians world-wide in more than 33,000 Rotary Clubs in more than 200 countries.

• Major initiatives of Rotary include the eradication of polio, the world’s largest privately held youth exchange program, and literacy.

• Club 24 is determined to impact 10,000 lives through our programs.
