Tiered Lesson Activity

Topic for the tiered assignment: Weather

Duration: 1, 30 minute library research time

3, 45 minute classroom times

Learning Goals: The learner will conduct investigations and use appropriate tools to build an understanding of the changes in weather.

Specific personalized goals for specific students:

• Struggling learners: The learner will recall 4 weather facts and draw the water cycle.

• Average learners: The learner will recall 6 weather facts, draw and label the water cycle.

• Advanced learners: The learner will recall 8 weather facts, draw, label, and describe the water cycle.

Pre-assessment plans: At the beginning of the weather unit we made a class KWL chart. We activated prior knowledge through the use of literature (Weather Words by Gail Gibbons).

Tiers of the Activity:

• Tier 1-Weather Facts Sheets: 8 weather facts, list and describe seasons, draw & describe the water cycle, list 3 weather fun facts, list 3 weather vocabulary terms with definitions.

• Tier 2-Weather Facts Sheet: 6 weather facts, list & describe seasons, draw & label the water cycle, 2 fun facts, 3 weather vocabulary terms with definitions.

• Tier 3-Weather Facts Sheet: 4 weather facts, list & illustrate seasons, draw water cycle, list 1 fun fact, 3 weather vocabulary terms with definitions.

How product was graded: A rubric was developed based on different components of the product such as accuracy, neatness, etc.

Monitoring student work and progress: Students were informally observed while they were doing research and completing the weather fact sheet.
